Desktop Computer Last year, between the two recycling days and the year-round drop-offs at a Mount Olive facility, Morris County collected 20 tons of used consumer electronics, said Laura Macpherson, the township's hazardous waste coordinator.
Notebooks "It's growing by leaps and bounds," Macpherson said.
Lenovo Computers become outdated in three to four years, said Gray Russell, Montclair's environmental outreach coordinator. By 2005, that number is expected to shrink to two years. With this high turnover, there's a high potential for damage.
Hard Drive "Never before has any culture or society bought so many new products that get outdated so quickly," Russell said. "So many of these things become a solid-waste problem."
Travelstar Computer monitors and televisions contain picture tubes, also called CRTs, which convert an electronic signal into a visual image, Russell said. Each cathode ray tube contains about 5 to 7 pounds of lead as well as other hazardous elements.
Gateway Computers and other electronics are responsible for 40 percent of all lead in our landfills, Russell said. Other heavy metals, such as mercury from cell phones, word processors and stereos, are released in the environment.
Laptop Parts "When you dispose of it in the garbage, it doesn't burn away. It remains in the ash. It's a human health problem as well as an environmental problem," Russell said.
Software The threat is also a global one. Old computers are sold to scrap metal dealers in countries such as Pakistan and India that employ migrant workers, including children, to extract valuable metals by smelting under unsafe conditions, Travers said. Print boards, for example, contain gold, titanium, copper and lead.
Hard Drives "They're taking apart 21st-century technology with tools from the 16th century. They don't know about the lead," Russell said. "They pour acid on plastic of the computer to melt it next to the river."
Electronics Outside the 60,000-square-foot Standard Recycling, Travers stood amid thousands of pieces of equipment in crates -- monitors, keyboards, modems, floppy drives, hard drives -- and said the company dismantles each item and refurbishes it for resale or donates it to a private organization.
Canon The company, which was founded in 1986 by Eric Buechel, does business with Fortune 500 companies, county and city governments, school systems and private citizens.
Desktop Pc "Everything has a value to it," Travers said. "We're trying to get equipment back in the mainstream."
