Staying Focused

By Andy Hahn Fishing seems to become increasingly competitive every day. More and more tournaments offer big-bucks payouts, charter crews work diligently to put their clients onto fish before other boats find the school, and even weekend anglers put pressure on themselves to get maximum enjoyment out of precious leisure time.
Laptop Battery "People look for every possible edge in fishing," says Sven Harms, vice president of marketing for Steiner Optics in New Jersey. "Binoculars can provide that edge." Whether you're searching for schools of bait, scanning skies for tattletale birds or trying to spot finning billfish, quality optics help you stay focused on the game and locate your quarry.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers When shopping around for binoculars, you'll hear lots of numbers and technical terms used to describe each model's capabilities. With all due respect for the science of physics, whose laws govern the behavior of light and optics, let's take a simplified look at binocular terminology and see what it means to anglers.

Designed to help promote air flow and reduce heat, the Cool Lift is perfect for notebook computers with the latest hot processors from Intel, AMD, Motorola, or IBM. Laptop Computer Magnification - making distant objects appear closer - stands as the primary function of binoculars. Also referred to as a binocular's "power," it's usually the first attribute listed by manufacturers and written as a number followed by an "x." For example, 8x30 binoculars make objects appear eight times larger (or eight times closer); 10x50 indicates a 10-power binocular.
laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)
Desktop Computer How much power do you need? Most offshore anglers opt for 7x binoculars because they deliver adequate magnification and field of view while easily incorporating other important features. Remember that along with the image, optics magnify movement, whether it's from shaky hands or a rocking boat - and holding 10x binoculars steady presents a challenge even on dry land. Higher power also means a narrower field of view; that is, how big a slice of the whole picture the glasses actually take in. Field of view can be expressed in feet at 1,000 yards or in degrees (angle of view). Harms recommends 7x50 binoculars with a field of view ranging from 350 to 385 feet at 1,000 yards, or an angle of view of about seven degrees, to facilitate scanning the distance for landmarks or signs of fish.
Notebooks The number following a binocular's magnification indicates the diameter, in millimeters, of the objective lens and directly affects light-gathering capability. In comparing models of equal power, the larger the objective lens (where light enters, as opposed to the ocular lens, where the user places his eye), the "brighter" the optics. Therefore, 7x50 glasses transmit more light than 7x30s, resulting in a brighter image.
Lenovo "A 7x50 binocular offers the right balance of power and brightness for anglers," says Harms. "This combination also results in the optimum exit-pupil size, which is determined by dividing the objective-lens diameter by power of magnification."
Hard Drive The exit pupil refers to the beam of light (image) that passes through the ocular lens and reaches the viewer's eye. Dividing 50 by seven tells us that 7x50 binoculars have exit pupils measuring 7.14 millimeters. "An exit pupil of that size helps compensate for binocular movement on a boat, and," explains Harms, "under low-light conditions, the human pupil dilates to about seven millimeters, matching that of the binocular. A larger exit pupil would be overkill, which is why you don't find many 7x60 or 7x70 binoculars."
Travelstar Factors besides lens size significantly affect optical brightness. "Manufacturers rely on proprietary processes and lens coatings to increase brightness and reduce haze," Harms says. "But if the lens elements aren't perfectly aligned, you'll lose light."
Gateway Many binocular manufacturers specify the "relative brightness" of their optics which, according to Nikon product manager John LaCort, is calculated by this standard formula: (objective-lens sizewpower)2. But the relative brightness of all 7x50 binoculars is equal. "Light transmission" represents a more accurate measurement of optical brightness because it accounts for differences resulting from lens coating and other variables. Expressed as a percentage, this measurement indicates how much of the light that enters the objective lens actually reaches the viewer's eye. Harms recommends binoculars featuring at least 85-percent light transmission, though not all manufacturers make this information available.
Laptop Parts Internal prisms direct and modify light as it passes through a binocular. Porro prisms are offset, requiring a wide-set binocular design; roof prisms are mounted in-line and result in a slim, straight-barrel binocular. Porro-prism binoculars dominate the marine market because they prove more cost effective and shock resistant, albeit heavier and bulkier than roof-prism models.

Hard Drives Get Relief
Electronics When a binocular vendor mentions eye relief, he's not talking about Visine. This term refers to how far you can hold your eyes from the ocular lenses and still see the entire image. Anglers wearing prescription glasses or shades benefit from long-eye-relief models, using binoculars without having to remove their glasses. Folks without glasses also enjoy long eye relief, which means they don't have to jam binoculars against their eyes in a bouncing boat. Long eye relief is a relative term frequently used in product brochures, so ask for specifics when comparing models. Harms cites 15 millimeters as the "industry-standard eye relief for 7x50 binoculars" and warns that this "may not be sufficient for all eyeglass wearers." Some binoculars feature eye relief of 20-plus millimeters. Test several different lengths to see which best suits you.
Canon Although not an absolute necessity, a built-in compass tells you exactly which direction you're looking when you spy navigational markers or other items of interest, letting you pass on precise information to the captain. Today's consumers can choose from binoculars featuring analog or digital compasses, with the latter costing an extra $500 or so. Harms emphasizes that, when comparing models, optical quality should outweigh features such as a compass because "before you can get a bearing, you have to spot your target."
Desktop Pc Full-body, rubber armor protects binoculars from impact damage and water penetration while providing sure footing. "Rubber armor helps binoculars grip a surface and avoid sliding off the console," says Harms, "so you can always keep them handy. The soft material also makes binoculars more comfortable to hold, increasing chances that you'll pick them up and use them."
Desktop Computers As a final word of advice, Harms says no single feature should influence your choice to buy a binocular. "Look at the entire package: optical quality, brightness, ruggedness, compass or other options. Test several binoculars before making your final decision."
