The annual 2,000-mile pilgrimage, which begins as far north as Canada and ends in the Transvolcanic Mountains in Mexico, is being documented by more than 100,000 people across the country, including here in the Garden State.

Desktop Computer Monarchs are the only species of butterfly that embark on such a long journey every year to escape the cold. Named by early American settlers after English King William, more than 100 million monarch butterflies live in North America.
Notebooks The ones who live west of the Rocky Mountains head to California during winter, where they roost in Eucalyptus and Monterey pine trees for several months.

Canon During the winter, the butterflies roost in colonies in the high-altitude forest for five months, conserving their energy for the return trip. Before they leave, they mate several times and lay their eggs on milkweed plants, the main source of food for monarchs, along their return trip.

Repair The butterflies are snagged with a net, tagged and then set free. The reservoir has participated in the program for several years.
Data Recovery Merrill Creek officials also are participating in a new program this year to monitor milkweeds and monarchs in their larva stage. This program, sponsored by the University of Minnesota, seeks to tackle questions such as why monarch populations vary in different regions.
