A Trip From Buffalo, NY To
Philadelphia, PA, March 27, 2008 Reviewer:
Kevin9823 Ok, here it is the review that you need
to read on the Garmin Nuvi 5000. I recently took the Nuvi 5000 on
an 800+ mile trip (round trip) from Buffalo, NY to Philadelphia,
PA. It was very good but not perfect. First the directions were
great! It calculated a route that was fast and direct. I checked it
against Mapquest when I got home and the routes I traveled on my
trip were identical between the two. The screen size was a major
help when navigating the fast pace of the major interstates in
Philly. I could NOT imagine trying to look at a 4.3 inch screen (or
a 3.5 inch for that matter!) while everybody is traveling at least
80mph on interstate I-95. POI database was good and found almost
everything I was looking for. MSN Direct was very useful. It told
me about traffic and gas prices along my route(s). I like the way
you can find the cheapest gas prices when you need gas. MSN Direct
was VERY accurate with traffic, gas, move times, ect.
Now the bad: Garmin needs to create a system update that makes the
Nuvi 5000 speak your up and coming turns more often. For example, I
would make a turn onto the interstate and the Garmin would say urn
right onto exit 152 in 45miles. Then the Nuvi will not speak again
until you are 0 .8 miles from your turn. I guess that is not bad if
traffic is light, but if it is heavy then look out. You might miss
your next turn especially if you have to cross over three or four
lanes of traffic. I think that this would be a simple fix if Garmin
heard the cries from many.
***Oh, I almost forgot-CHECK THIS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On my trip I
had to go through a tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I just
knew that I would briefly loose my satellite signal and I was ok
with that because it should come back once I was out of the tunnel.
Guess what, I DID NOT LOOSE MY SATILITE SIGNAL. The Garmin Nuvi
5000 tracked my position all the way through the tunnel.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don ask me how because I thought that
this GPS did not have the ead reckoning feature. But I did
notice that there were a lot of new features in the GPS after I did
the latest system update for free online. For example, the
etour function has changed for the better. Now when you tap
the detour button it brings up a list of choices for detouring. It
now allows you to pick how much of the route you want to detour
(like 2, or 5 miles) or you can exclude some or all the roads in
the route.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a good light weight GPS with a
big bright colorful screen, good accurate directions, and a lot of
useful features then this unit is for you. If Garmin fixes the
above complaint then this thing would be PERFECT.

Package Includes Reviews Garmin International is proud to
introduce its first two GPS-enabled handheld devices for the Family
Radio Service (FRS) and high-performance General Mobile Radio
Service (GMRS) markets the
Rino 110 and
Rino 120 . These GPS devices integrate radio
functionality to provide two-way communications up to two miles
using FRS channels and up to five miles using GMRS channels.
Inspired by the distinctive offset FRS and GPS antennas that give
the devices their Rhinoceros-like appearance, GARMIN designed the
Rino series as powerful, robust
Radios
Integrated with Navigation for the
Outdoors. They are also the only waterproof two-way
radios on the market.
What really separates the Rino from the rest of the FRS herd is the
ability to "beam" your exact location to another Rino user within a
two-mile range using the FRS spectrum. This is called
Peer-to-Peer Positioning.
The Rino boasts Garmin's traditional tough, lightweight, wat
erproof design to handle the rigors of any outdoor adventure. And
because the Rino has standard FRS capabilities, you can talk to
friends or family who own conventional FRS radios.
WAAS for
even greater accuracy! The Rino 120 offers standard FRS
features like 14 channels, 38 squelch codes, and external voice
activation (VOX). It also incorporates GARMIN s powerful
12-channel GPS receiver for position accuracy of less than 10 feet
when enabled to receive enhanced GPS data from the Wide Area
Augmentation System (WAAS). The Rino 110 has standard navigation
features like extensive waypoint storage, TracBack technology,
multiple position formats (including MGRS and Loran TD) and a
built-in trip computer.
Features
- Channels: 1-7 FRS/GMRS*; 8-14 FRS; 15-22 GMRS (each channel has
38 sub-audible squelch codes for semi-private conversations)
- External voice activation (VOX)
- GPS features: 12-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver
- Trip computer and TracBack technology

functions in GPS mode
- Clear reception with a range of up to two miles using FRS, five
miles with GMRS

accuracy of 20 feet or less in normal mode, 10 feet or less when

Details Reviews NOTE:
The new GPS 17HVS, part # 010-00242-53, replaces the old one, part
# 010-00242-03. The new model features a removable mast mount
base.
WAAS Enabled The new Garmin GPS 17HVS is designed
primarily for use in marine applications and can be flush mounted
in addition to pole mounted. It delivers exceptional accuracy while
standing up to the harshest environment (meets IEC 60529 IPX7
standards). The 12-channel receiver allows for continuous tracking
of all visible satellites - and it's WAAS capable, which means it
can provide position accuracy of less than three meters (on
average). This incredible accuracy is possible without the use of
an external DGPS beacon receiver. The GPS 17HVS also offers
excellent EMI/RFI performance for easy integration into systems
that will be operated near mobile computing devices and wireless
communications equipment.
This GPS receiver produces asynchronous serial data at true RS-232
levels in the industry-standard NMEA 0183 data format. This makes
it ideal for interfacing to devices (such as laptops and
chartplotters) that expect to hear NMEA 0183 data from a serial com
port. The GPS 17HVS also is capable of producing a TTL-level
Pulse-Per-Second (PPS) signal whose rising edge is aligned to the
UTC second boundary within 1 uS for all conditions in which the GPS
receiver has produced a valid and accurate position for at least
the previous four-second interval.
