Strengths: Ext3 filesystem; easy to install your HD
Summary: Purchased: end of August 2005. When
arrived, the install (HD, connections, startup, admin pages)
was very simple. For shared fileserver on a local (unexposed)
LAN this seems to be a very good choice. averatec
Including backups, etc. Fast, reliable, no limitations like
other NAS solutions that use FAT instead of Ext3. Caution: you
cannot use your own formatted drive (e.g. FAT or NTFS) - it has
to format the drive as Linux's own Ext3. After all this
exciting experience, I started to create own web space with
picture gallery for friends and family. First thing I noticed
was that I couldn't restrict access to some parts of the
web tree. hardware
So I wrote an e-mail to ADSTech. No response. Then I started
to play more. I wanted to find out what webserver they use and
use .htaccess ot something similar. No luck, but during the
experiments, I found out that they don't restrict using
'..' in URL and soon I saw ALL MY files on the HD via
Web, and then I was even able to see the full Linux filesystem.
Got scared, instantly disconnected it from internet and wrote
another e-mail to ADSTech support. No response either. dual xeon
So I keep using it as backup/file server and hope to see
some action on ADSTech side - responding to e-mails, firmware
upgrade, anything. The product has great potential but the
security flaws may slow it dramatically. Reviewed by:

Aluminum shell, price Summary: I bought this
unit because it was one of the lowest costing NAS kits that
does NOT use FAT32 and is NOT an NDAS device. That said, it
does exactly what it claims to do. However, I thought the
firmware was very limited. It is based off of Linux, so I think
ADS could have opened it up a little more by offering shell
access or, at least, the source code. For those who just want a
network hard drive, this is it. storage
