Staff There are two basic cartography formats: raster-scanned and vector. Raster-scanned charts look exactly like the full-color government charts you've always used - in fact, they are scanned directly from the NOAA charts. Vector charts are laboriously produced renditions of government charts created by a person using an electronic stylus to trace selected lines, marks, shading and other features the manufacturer chooses to include on its cartridges.
