Employers To Think Twice About Recruiting Women
Chalfont, UK August 02, 2007 A new study published today
shows that changes to maternity legislation, introduced from
1st April 2007, are resulting in an increased reluctance to
employ women, particularly among small and medium-sized
businesses (SMBs). The independent research, commissioned by
Citrix Online, a division of Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:
CTXS) surprisingly reveals that 53% of employers believe the
new regulations are making some managers think twice about
recruiting women. desktop
The Citrix Online survey also uncovered widespread ignorance
about the new maternity legislation, with 34% of SMBs unaware
of the changes. These changes include the extension of
statutory maternity pay from six to nine months and the removal
of qualifying criteria so that all mothers are now entitled to
12 months maternity leave, regardless of how long they have
been employed in their position. infosys
The new regulations are the latest in a series of
family-friendly initiatives introduced by the government since
2003 to help employees balance work and family
responsibilities. According to the Department for Business,
Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, the initiatives have improved
employee retention rates, with fewer women now changing
employers after they return to work from maternity leave.
Despite this, 30% of employers in the Citrix Online survey
thought it would be harder to retain talented women in the
workforce and a further 26% believe the latest changes would

On the positive side, 72% of respondents felt that the new
regulations will cause the more progressive companies to adopt
additional flexible working practices to help working mothers
manage the demands of work and family. Currently, 78% of
employers allow staff to take a day s holiday at very
short notice and 64% offer the option to adjust start and
finish time. However, just 18% offer formal flexitime and only
11% operate job sharing initiatives, according to the Citrix

One of the key ways companies can support working mothers is
by providing them with technology that allows them to work from
home as if they were in the office. Yet, the research shows
only 43% of SMBs have any technologies in place to support home
working, compared to 76% of bigger companies. lap top
So why aren t more people using it Though
Web-conferencing tools are spreading, companies aren t
taking full advantage of the potential benefits, analysts say,
because products have been seen as too complicated, too
expensive and too unreliable. According to IDC Inc., a
Framingham, Mass., technology-research company, three-quarters
of surveyed companies that have adopted online conferencing
still don t make it available to all employees. And where
the tools are available, they often sit unused because
employees find them too complicated. refurbished
The barriers to the technology have been too high in
the past, says Robert Mahowald, an IDC research manager.
This is beginning to change, thanks to improvements in the
leading Web-conferencing tools. The number of Web-conference
users world-wide is projected to increase to 107 million this
year from 79 million in 2003 and 51 million in 2002, IDC says.
Nearly a third of surveyed users said they had tried the
technology in the past 12 months for the first time. memory
Logging In
At its simplest, Web conferencing is the online complement
to the common conference call. Participants log in to a
restricted Web site, where they can view slide presentations,
send text messages to others in the meeting and work together
on documents and spreadsheets. Some services also offer online
white boards, where the presenter can draw diagrams, as well as
the ability to conduct surveys of conference participants and

Web conferencing began working its way into the mainstream
in the mid-1990s with the launch of services by WebEx
Communications Inc. and Placeware, which is now called
Microsoft Live Meeting and is part of Microsoft Corp. But the
systems lacked the simplicity and ease of use necessary to be
widely adopted. as400
To make Web conferencing simpler, vendors have been moving
to integrate their systems with common desktop tools, such as
e-mail and instant messaging. WebEx, Microsoft and other
leading vendors install a meeting icon in a customer s
Microsoft Outlook e-mail program; with a click of the button,
organizers can schedule a meeting and send all attendees an
e-mail containing a calendar listing and a link to the meeting
Web site. Attendees join the meeting by clicking on the link
and separately dialing in to the voice conference call. averatec
Raindance Communications Inc., based in Louisville, Colo.,
makes it simpler to invite team members to an online meeting.
After joining the Web part of the conference, attendees can
enter their phone numbers and have the system call them on
their phone. It s a wow to people when they
see that feature, says Carolyn Rohn, senior director of
technical support at Bowne Co., a New York-based

Bowne moved to Raindance early last year after trying a
handful of other Web-conferencing tools. Ms. Rohn s
department has used Raindance s Meeting Edition to
demonstrate new software to the company s sales reps; dual xeon
the tool enables users to test the software and give
immediate feedback, cutting the time it takes to introduce
improvements, and it makes it easier to hold impromptu meetings
to fit the staff s schedule. storage
Informal, on-the-fly use of the tool in other departments so
far is limited, but Ms. Rohn expects that to change. As
people get more comfortable with it, she says,
they ll use it like e-mail. Flexible
Pricing Cost has been another obstacle. Typically,
there have been two ways to pay for the most popular services.
First, you could pay by the number of attendees you expect to
have in meetings at the same time, which enables meetings to
last as long as necessary but requires additional charges as
participants are added. Or you could buy an allotment of
minutes say 100 minutes per person a month which
allows more flexibility in the number of attendees, but can
mean runaway monthly charges when people go over their

In practice, both plans held back growth. So some vendors
have come up with alternative pricing models. Microsoft s
Live Meeting in June introduced a named-user
license. Annually, companies pay $300 (less with a volume
discount) for each employee, plus a $3, 000 fee for each group
license. A cheaper version is also available. Microsoft says
80% of its new customers are choosing the named-user
