Nuera Introduces New Media Gateway for Cable VoIP

Simplifies the Challenges Cable Operators Encounter When Introducing and Scaling VoIP Telephone Services

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2004--Nuera Communications Inc. introduced the ORCA(R) BTX-4K media gateway to help cable operators easily deploy cost-effective public telephone network interconnections. With the ORCA BTX-4K, cable operators can manage a wide range of public telephone network interconnections as they launch and expand voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone services throughout their cable systems.
The BTX-4K delivers new levels of system density and reliability to simplify the challenges cable operators encounter when launching and expanding VoIP telephone services. The BTX-4K is a PacketCable-compliant media gateway that provides up to 4,032 voice ports over six (6) DS3 interfaces in a 5.25" (13.34cm) high chassis. The BTX-4K supports the protocol, codec and security functionality specified in the PacketCable standards. The BTX-4K is the first media gateway to provide high reliability through 1+1 common logic and voice processing redundancy. In addition, voice port capacity may be increased without impacting service.

"The scalability and high-availability characteristics of the BTX-4K will enable us to easily deliver our Cox Digital Telephone(TM) service offering in our markets," said Jay Rolls, vice president of Telephone and Data Engineering for Cox Communications. "The cost-effective entry price and the economic scalability are great fits with our deployment strategy. In addition, the 1+1 redundancy scheme will provide the system availability and quality that our subscribers have come to expect from all our services."

"The next 18 months will be exciting for the cable telephone industry," said Bill Ingram, president and chief executive officer, Nuera Communications. "Many cable operators have aggressive VoIP rollout plans. Cable operators have come to trust Nuera to deliver high quality products. We expect the BTX-4K and the other media gateways in our portfolio to be the common elements in these deployments."

The BTX-4K is presently in lab trials and will be generally available by October 2004.
