Laptop Battery Suddenly, I am seeing street trees in a whole new light. Previously, they were just a backdrop that made my commute in rural Litchfield County, Conn., more pleasant, and the only time they caught my attention was when tree-trimming crews halted my speedy progress. But all that changed when I heard about a program that trains citizen foresters to help take care of trees in public places.
Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.
Thinkpad Citizen foresters - a k a tree stewards - are volunteer watchdogs more concerned with crab apples than crime. They date to the 1960's, when Dutch elm disease began felling street trees, and now tackle everything from pruning to park planning.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers Most towns have professional tree wardens charged with the care and feeding of trees along paved roads, in public parks, around schools and in other community-owned spaces. Although footage regulations vary from town to town, tree wardens typically are responsible for watering, fertilizing, pruning and replacing trees within roughly 10 feet of a paved right of way. But many must devote the bulk of their time to dealing with trees that pose hazards - pruning dangling limbs, for example, that reduce visibility or threaten to fall on passers-by.

According to Susan Mockenhaupt, a national coordinator for the Urban and Community Forestry Program at the United States Forest Service, volunteers are active in 11,000 communities. Many of them students or members of organizations like the Rotary Club, the volunteers are trained by state foresters, who in turn receive small grants of $5,000 to $20,000 from her program and from state agencies. Citizen foresters are well versed on the role of trees in the reduction of air pollution as well as soil erosion, and can describe the benefits of trees as windbreaks, sound barriers and cooling agents. A properly installed avenue of trees can even improve the flow of traffic.
Notebooks The one-day training session I attended, in Wellesley, Mass., began with a debunking of common myths. Did you know that the roots of most trees snake along the top 18 inches of the soil rather than spreading out in a fan toward the center of the earth? The roots typically have a diameter twice the height of the tree, although the greatest mass falls within the drip-line. Severing roots can spell doom. And that's just the underground story. There is also all the heft aloft to worry about.
Lenovo After being briefed on the perils of poplars (weak, fast-growing and therefore prone to breakage) and the benefits of redbuds (which form a short open canopy), citizen foresters are ready to start work.
Hard Drive OFTEN the first thing they do is take inventory, tallying trees in the neighborhood and noting their health and general condition. Many do much more. Christopher Donnelly, the urban forestry coordinator in Connecticut, says one of the most active groups in his state works in the town of Milford and has 65 members who completed an inventory of 16,538 trees. Today they help plant trees, clean up after storms, run a nursery with 1,500 tree seedlings and publish an educational newsletter.
Travelstar For street service, savvy tree stewards have learned to steer clear of fast-growing species that tend to be weak, like willows; shallow-rooted ones like beeches and poplars; and ones that can't tolerate urban stress, like silver lindens and sugar maples.
Gateway The Norway maple, a common choice for streets 30 years ago, is capable of reaching mammoth proportions, assuming it survives: The tree scalds when pruned and is susceptible to disease. It also sheds prolific quantities of invasive seeds.
Laptop Parts The Bradford pear, also once ubiquitous along streets, tends to split at the crotch upon reaching maturity. Another Callery pear, called the Chanticleer, has begun to replace it, although experts warn against relying on any one species.
Software Indeed, during the training session I attended, Paul Jahnige, a professional forester in Massachusetts, cautioned against planting trees "without fully understanding the 20-year ramifications" and he emphasized the value of diversity. Having lost all my streetside hemlocks to woolly adelgid, I took notes: Rather than create a single-species alle, he said, think about a layered look composed of many different trees, something I took to heart when I rushed home after the session to reshuffle the trees on my property.
Hard Drives Extension agents and arborists often suggest forgoing tall, stately streetside trees that form an overhead arch, tangling up utility lines in the process, favoring more compact species like Kousa dogwoods, crab apples, Carolina silverbells, thornless hawthorns, star magnolias, redbuds and serviceberries.
