At NAB 2004, BBC Technology, a provider of product and services to media-driven organizations, today announced the release of version 1.0 of the Colledia(TM) AAF Plug-in for Windows Media 9 Series (WM9S). Furthermore, the AAF Plug-in for WM9S, with support for the new AAF Edit Protocol (see release "AAF Association Releases New AAF Edit Protocol at NAB 2004," April 20, 2004), will be available in late summer. The AAF Plug-in is a component of BBC Technology's production workflow software, Colledia(TM) Workflow. This 'enabling technology' will empower news producers, editors and journalists to access, utilize and deliver high quality media and metadata to the desktop, and deliver a true enterprise-scale solution for supporting the full broadcast media lifecycle. The AAF Plug-in for WM9S further marginalizes tape-based production by freeing content creators from the confines and expense associated with editing room and dedicated hardware systems. The BBC is currently managing the sale of BBC Technology, which will also incorporate a procurement process for a new technology services contract for the Corporation (see press release, 'BBC to Sell Technology Subsidiary', November 27, 2003). The move follows a strategic review of the BBC's technology requirements for the next decade, which identified potential annual savings for the BBC of between GBP 20-GBP 30m if its technology services were outsourced. Combining the procurement process with the sale of BBC Technology as a whole means the BBC can leverage maximum value and, as a result, invest more money in its programs and services. The move offers growth opportunities for the 1400 staff at BBC Technology as the company is attracting bids from major technology businesses with scale and expertise. It is anticipated that the process will be complete in Autumn 2004.
