Storage III. Navigation

Seagate The main screen for the Instructor Resource CD-ROM enables you to access all the items listed in the Contents section of this Read Me. To launch the main screen, double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click the CD-ROM drive icon. The contents of the CD will appear - double-click on the file "start.exe".

Computer Sales Alternatively, click on the Windows Start button, click Run, then enter "d:\start.exe"(or substitute d for your CD-ROM drive letter) in the Open dialog box. Hit "OK", and the main screen will appear.

Computer Hardware There are five icons on the left side of the main screen. Each icon, including any submenus,is explained below.

  1. Printers Prentice Hall logo
    Click on this logo to open the main page of the Prentice Hall website. A browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) is required to open the web page.

  2. Technology ReadMe
    Click on this icon to open this Read Me file. It is a plain text file and should open on any computer.

  3. Mainframe Install
    This feature allows you to install the components of the CD to your hard drive. The Prentice Hall Test Manager and Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed to work properly. The other items can be installed, or simply browsed (the browse feature is explained below).

  4. Samsung Click on Install to open a submenu with all the items on the CD. Click on the item that you wish to install on your hard drive. Once installed, use My Computer or Windows Explorer to locate and use the files.

    • Computer Repair Prentice Hall Test Manager is the computerized testing program for this book. Once installed, enter "1" for User ID and "instructor" for the Password. Complete on-line documentation is accessible from the Test Manager Help menu.

    • Used Computers Instructor's Resource Manual consists of Microsoft Word files for each chapter. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "EssentialsXP".

    • Network Test Item File consists of Microsoft Word files for each chapter of the test bank. It has the same questions as the Prentice Hall Test Manager. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1".

    • Digital Cameras PowerPoint Slides are lecture outlines in Microsoft PowerPoint. Each chapter is in a separate PowerPoint file. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1"

    • Desktops Student Datafiles are application files organized by project for your convenience. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1".- Solutions Files are application files organized by project for your convenience. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1".

    • Cognos Additional Exercises Datafiles are application files organized by project for your convenience. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1".

    • Hosting Additional Exercises Solutions Files are application files organized by project for your convenience. Each applications files will install into a directory on your hard drive called "Essentials XP Level 1".

  5. Netfinity Browse
    Browse allows you to view many of the files without installing them to your hard drive.

  6. Internet Click on Browse to open a submenu with the items to be browsed. You can easily view the files, and print them from the Browse feature. However, you cannot edit and then save the files back to the CD-ROM. If you wish to edit files, you should Install them (see Install feature above).

    • Cheap Computer Instructor's Resource Manual opens a window with the IRM file in it. Double-click the file to open it in Microsoft Word.

    • Digital Camera Test Item File opens a window with the TIF files in it. Double-click the desired file to open it in Microsoft Word.

    • Printer Student Datafiles opens a window with the sdf files in it. Double-click the desired file to open it in it's application.

    • Xseries Solution Files opens a window with the sol files in it. Double-click the desired file to open it in it's application.

    • Maxtor Additional Exercises Datafiles opens a window with the aesdf files in it. Double-click the desired file to open it in it's application.

    • Data Storage Additional Exercises Solution Files opens a window with the aesol files in it. Double-click the desired file to open it in it's application.

    • Hitachi Adobe Acrobat Reader can be installed from this CD. It is found in the "install" folder. Simply click Rp500enu.exe and follow the install prompts. Some of the files on this CD-ROM are Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) files. They can be read with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You already may have a copy of the Reader installed on your computer. If you do not, this CD also contains a copy of the Reader that can be installed to your hard drive through the install feature of this CD. Click install on the main screen of this CD-ROM, then click on Adobe Acrobat Reader from the submenu. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Reader to your hard drive.To view PDF files: On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Acrobat Reader 5.0. The Reader will start and allow you to choose a PDF file to view. If you have access to the Internet and a Web browser you also may download the latest version of the Acrobat Reader free from Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com.

    Rational Whether you install the Acrobat Reader from this CD, or down-load a copy from the Web, or if you already have a copy installed on your computer, we strongly suggest that you read the Help file (Acrobat 5-0 Help.pdf) that comes with the Acrobat Reader as well as the on-line help that is available from within the Reader program. To access this file Acrobat Reader must already be installed on your computer. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click the CD-ROM drive icon. The contents of the CD will appear - double-click on the file "Acrobat 5-0 Help.pdf". This will help you become familiar with the program, how to move around the pages that appear on your screen, and how to adjust the size of a page to make it easier to read.

  7. Websphere CW logo
    Click on this logo to open the Long and Long, Computers website. A browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) is required to open the website.
