Space-Saving Electronics

Bigger's not always better in the world of marine electronics,
especially in a limited space. The small size of many of today's
advanced units allows fishing and navigation electronics to fit the
helm station of surprisingly small boats. Best of all, these
diminutive models offer full-size performance.
Laptop Battery For example, thanks to the miracle of miniaturization, the
necessary components of a multi-channel GPS receiver now fit on a
single circuit board. Most hand-held and flush-mounted models share
the same board and therefore the same level of performance.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Thinkpad Virtually all compact marine electronics use LCD screens that
offer better visibility than CRT displays in direct sunlight. This
makes them a good choice for outside installations on flying-bridge
helms without tops. Most feature kits that allow flush-mounting,
but use these with care. LCD screens have a relatively narrow
viewing angle and must often be tilted for best visibility.
Flush-mounted units can't be tilted.

Microsoft Several approaches can be taken with sounders and navigation
receivers to make the best use of limited space. A pair of compact
models can be mounted side by side. This offers extra safety: If
one goes down, you don't automatically lose the other. Separate
units also allow you the advantage of dedicating a full screen to
each purpose.
laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)
Laptop Computers A combination sounder and nav receiver can be mounted where
space is extremely tight. Most combo units are the same size or
only slightly larger than a compact, stand-alone sounder or nav
receiver and will fit almost anywhere. Building two units into one
case means that both share the same screen, but special display
features minimize potential disadvantages. Split-screen displays on
most units can be manipulated to show both types of information in
equal proportions, side by side, or they can be set to favor one
over the other. While navigating to a spot, the plotter or steering
graphics can fill the screen while a digital box at the edge of the
display tracks your depth. While fishing, a top-to-bottom sonar
view can be shown next to a zoom view while present position
coordinates appear at the edge of the screen. If navigation is
critical to your fishing method, a plotter screen can occupy one
side of the display while a sonar picture shows on the other.
"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer Most compact sounders and navigation units are built tough
enough to resist the saltwater environment and require a minimum of
care. Some of the smallest units come from manufacturers with
mainly a freshwater heritage and may not be well-suited for
offshore use. The top-of-the-line models from these makers are
usually most appropriate for saltwater applications, providing the
highest transmitter outputs and usually offering multi-frequency or
optional low-frequency operation.
Notebooks Some compact sounders can't deliver sufficient detail at depths
beyond a few hundred feet because of their operating frequency,
transducer cone angle or relatively low transmit power.
High-powered units operating at about 200 kHz are adequate to
medium depths (500-600 feet; more in some cases) when used with a
narrow-beam 8- to 10-degree transducer. Those operating at 50 kHz
read well in deep water (1,000 feet or more). Even with high
transmitter power of 1,600 watts peak-to-peak (200 watts, RMS) or
more, units using a 455 kHz frequency won't be able to match the
depth-penetrating performance of units using the lower
frequencies.
Lenovo On a flats skiff where depth penetration is of no concern,
you'll get better performance from a unit with the opposite
characteristics. Nearly any sounder has enough power to deliver
solid readings down to 100 feet, and lower-powered sounders with
wide cone angles will give less trouble and better performance in
shallow water. High-powered sounders often don't work as well in
water less than 8 to 10 feet deep where flats boats spend most of
their time.
Hard Drive Sonar of any kind isn't much help in depths of 3 feet or less
where you can see the bottom. The sounder that flats fishermen
dream about, one that looks ahead and warns of shoaling from a
20-inch depth up to 6 to 8 inches in time to prevent grounding,
doesn't yet exist. A compact chart plotter using DGPS and accurate
chart cards would be a better tool for avoiding shoals. Should you
spot or hit an unmarked shoal, marking it on-screen with a danger
icon would prevent future groundings on it.
Travelstar A wide variety of very compact, cartridge-based chart plotters
are available in both flush-mount and hand-held varieties. If one
of these suits your fancy, pick one that's compatible with the
digital chart-card format that you already have. If you don't
currently own a library of chart cards, pick a unit with a card
format that offers thorough coverage of your fishing areas. It
would be hard to go wrong with C-Map- or Navionics-based systems,
but the proprietary systems offered by equipment manufacturers may
offer better coverage in some areas than others. You'll be
impressed by how a moving map can improve your navigation, even in
those tight areas accessible by only the smallest boat.
