Desktop Computer Despite the Hubble's successes, NASA believes it's time to scrap the giant telescope, especially in light of the Columbia tragedy a few years ago, which underscored the risks in space shuttle missions. NASA believes it's possible to forgo another repair mission, which was supposed to resupply the telescope with gyroscopes to replace two that are malfunctioning, new batteries and a more powerful field camera and spectrometer. NASA contends that other telescopes -- the Spitzer, Chandra, Kepler and James Webb, the latter two of which are coming on line -- along with ground-based telescopes and instruments, will still present an endless array of possibilities for studying astronomical phenomena.
