Tumbleweed Unveils Latest Version of Industry Leading MailGate with Anti-Virus Technology and Improved Anti-Spam Performance

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 2004--Tumbleweed(R) Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:TMWD), a leading provider of secure Internet messaging software and appliances for enterprises and government agencies, announced today the 2.1 release of the company's MailGate, an award-winning Linux based appliance used to fight spam and viruses. The new version of MailGate 2.1 introduces comprehensive anti-virus scanning and blocking capabilities -- and an updated anti-spam data set to improve the spam capture rate of the MailGate appliance.
Sold as an optional feature set, MailGate Anti-Virus Scanning is powered by the McAfee Olympus Engine. When MailGate Anti-Virus Scanning is enabled, all incoming email is scanned for viruses. Email containing viruses can be tagged and quarantined or deleted according to the administrator's settings. MailGate 2.1 also introduces enhancements for improved anti-spam performance, as well as user interface improvements for easier administration and use of the MailGate. MailGate 2.1 supports the MailGate 1300 appliance platform with faster processor and additional message storage capacity.

"We are pleased to announce the 2.1 release of the award-winning MailGate appliance with anti-virus," said Jeff Smith, Chairman and CEO of Tumbleweed Communications Corp. "We will continue to develop products that strengthen our leadership position in the email security markets by making Internet communications secure for our customers by offering the broadest, most flexible options for stopping unwanted e-mail that often can contain mechanisms for fraud and other attacks."

This represents the latest update of Tumbleweed's award-winning Linux-based anti-spam appliance and the first MailGate product release since Tumbleweed announced its acquisition of leading anti-spam appliance vendor, Corvigo. By adding a hardened, secure Linux-based anti-spam appliance to its portfolio, Tumbleweed strengthens its leadership position in the email security markets by offering customers the broadest, most flexible options for stopping spam with either the MailGate hardened Linux-based appliance, or Tumbleweed's Email Firewall, a globally scalable Windows-based enterprise software solution.

About Tumbleweed's MailGate Appliance

MailGate, Tumbleweed's top-rated Linux appliance, provides email filtering solutions based on Tumbleweed's proprietary IBF (Intent Based Filtering) technology. IBF technology uses artificial intelligence to determine the intent of an email and then act upon that intent. IBF technology has proven to be effective with 95% filtering and extremely low false positives, easy to update, and inexpensive to maintain. MailGate also provides junk, legitimate, and bulk email categories to give users more control over how their email is categorized. MailGate was rated #1 against major competitors in real-world testing by InfoWorld in February, 2004. More than 100 enterprise customers including organizations such as Cox Communications Middle America, Hammacher-Schlemmer and Purdue University have deployed the MailGate to fight spam.
