Thinkpad (AXcess News) Reno - Thanks to a flaw in Microsoft Internet Explorer, phishers have found a way to access computers through Google Desktop. That's according to an Israeli hacker who posted detailed information on how such an attack would work on his blog.

Google Desktop gives you easy access to information on your computer and from the web. It's a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, music, photos, chats and web pages that you've viewed. By making your computer searchable, Google Desktop puts your information easily within your reach and frees you from having to manually organize your files, emails and bookmarks. It makes searching your computer as easy as searching the web with Google.

Microsoft According to Matan Gillon, the IE bug concerns Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) format. Phishers can use Google Desktop through CSS formats to gain access to a users hard drive to get sensitive information, like passwords or credit card numbers.

If you have Google, Yahoo, Windows, or X1 desktop search installed on your computer, you can search your desktop from any mobile phone.

Laptop Computers Thephisher's can access a person's hard drivewith IE 6 and Google Desktop version 2, and may also work on other versions of Microsoft's browser. Gillon said the hackers could not gain access through other browsers like Firefox or Opera. But a user's computer would not be vulnerable until they visited a malicious web site operated by a phisher.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer The Israeli hacker said that if you turn off JavaScript inyour IE browser it would prevent an attack.

Almost 10 years later, the trend of abandoning desktop computers in favor of laptops is creating a new era in computing security.

Desktop Computer Microsoft's Sandi Hardmeier says that IE 7 contains a Phishing Filter that Internet Explorer users can upgrade to that can help prevent phishing attacks in a story posted on Microsoft's website on November 10. Though Harmeier's article does not mention the hack Gillon described on his blog.

Notebooks If your worried about phishing attacks or suspect that a hacker has gained access to your hard drive, you can report the phishing attack or find out more about how to prevent hackers from gaining access to your computer hard drive at the Anti-Phishing Work Group.

Lenovo Hardmeier's story on IE 7 and Microsoft's Phishing Filter also has links to Anti-phishing white paper, resources and related documentsand how to Protect yourself from online crime

Hard Drive Google Blogspot makes no mention of Gillon's discovery, as its a one-sided blog where posts are made by Google and here its all cheery, smiles and free T-shirts. There were no post's that we could find on Microsoft's site either.
