Thinkpad Spokespersons for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor Stone & Webster confirmed Friday, March 22, that International Uranium Corporation (IUC) is out of the running to receive 470,000 tons of thorium byproduct and contaminated soil from the former Maywood Chemical Works site in Maywood, New Jersey. IUC had hoped to import the Maywood material to its White Mesa uranium mill south of Blanding. Instead, the contract was awarded to the Cotter Corporation uranium mill in Canon City, Colorado.
Cotter plans to use the dirt to cover two radioactive holding ponds. The dirt was mildly contaminated with thorium at an industrial plant that manufactured burners for lanterns. The health department also raised new questions Friday about whether there is enough room in the two holding ponds to accommodate the dirt and other waste that has yet to be placed there. The ponds are heavily contaminated by 30 years of dumping the waste of milling uranium from ore and processing it into fuel for nuclear power plants.
