Gaming Journal #4: Donny's Black Project

Laptop Battery "So the Snake's finally come out of his hole? Are you ready now... my brother?"

Solid Snake: Why are you calling me brother? Who the hell are you!?

"I'm you. I'm your shadow."

Snake: What!?

"Ask the father that you killed! I'll send you to hell to meet him!!"

Lots of fighting between Solid Snake and Liquid Snake ensues. Yada yada. A crashing helicopter and explosion follow. Snake steps out from behind cover to gaze at the flames.

Snake: See you in hell...Liquid. That takes care of the cremation.

I want to apologize to my readers. The Gaming Journal is supposed to be updated regularly, but Im still feeling my way into a schedule that should see me posting twice a week. Sometimes its difficult to write about some topics, especially when theyre about a new game I just started playing. Its even harder to write about topics that are of less significance to me when I know Id rather write about something else.

Anyway, I finally got the game that I vowed I would have in my collection, and Ive been playing it pretty much every free hour Ive had since about Wednesday of last weekthe day I finished my finals. There are so many ideas Ive had for topics I would like to expand on, but they really dont offer much depth. Today, Ive decided to just focus on my new game.

Ive been playing Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. This is the game I promised myself I would get when I heard it was being developed for the GameCube. It was one of the best games I played on the Playstation, but I never truly got into the experience since I always had to play it when I was with my friendit was his game. Its nearly impossible to get the full experience playing it at someone elses house, so playing it now feels like a brand new experience to me.

Its everything I remembered it to be and more! The game feels like eternal bliss from the moment Solid Snake rises up out of the water and steps foot on Shadow Moses Island until all thats left is the northern lights overhead and the sun peaking up over the horizon. Its one of the best stories Ive ever seen unfold. I will probably play through this game many times just for the story.

And the whole time I was playing the Twin Snakes, I couldnt help thinking back to gamers reactions when they heard Metal Gear Solid was coming to GameCube. We didnt know what to expect. It was quite simply good news regardlesssave for the worry that it was a Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance port. There was this hype of uncertainty surrounding the secretive Konami project previous rumors had alluded to.

Then we heard it was a remake of Metal Gear Solid, one of the best games on Playstation. Some people were very pleased to hear thisprobably those who were worried about a Substance port. Others were very disappointed by the news of the remake because they were hoping the main franchise was coming to GameCube. This left a lot of gamers uncertain about the game being worked on.

As the details spilled out, we learned that Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima had exchanged thoughts, and Miyamoto was fond of Metal Gear Solid. So, in a sloppy summary, Kojima agreed to let Nintendo remake the original for GameCube. We learned Silicon Knights was chosen to do the remake. To the outside world, this meant Konamis involvement in the project was limited. They werent making much of an investment, and the development of the game was an in-house project. Both details smack of negativity in the eyes of Nintendo fans.

In one sense, this was definitely not the grand news we all thought it was: Konamis present to us was, in fact, a lot like giving someone coupons for Christmassomeone else is paying the cost. To tell the truth, this really seemed a lot like borrowing a license to manufacture a game. On top of that, it seems some very strict guidelines were put in place to see that the game adheres to Hideo Kojimas original vision. Other than licensing and character models, Konami didnt show much interest in the projectas far as I can see.

In another sense, GameCube owners have been treated to one of the greatest productions of the 20th centuryspecial thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto for snagging this title for us loyal Nintendo gamers! The story is a suspenseful thriller with a huge mystery-filled plot and a great back-story for the characters and setting. Its nothing short of an action-packed blockbuster that would rock the box office if it were made for the silver screen. The story is faithfully retold in this remake with crisp beautiful textures and some of the best particle effects Ive ever seenthe snowstorm scenes are brilliant. There really wasnt a wrong way to go with the remake even if no changes outside of visuals were made.

A lot of gamers fall on one side of the fence or the other, and it seems quite a few were disappointed that this wasnt an original Metal Gear story. It wasnt receiving Konamis full support, either, and, furthermore, it wasnt going to be Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Thats a double negative in Nintendo land, but it cant be helped that so much boundless hype surrounds new Metal Gear Solid games when, in fact, nothing else has ever stacked up to the original Metal Gear Solid. Even now, with a faithful remake that strictly follows the original, there are still complaints.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
