Processor Laptop computers used to fall short when comparing processing speed with desktop computers. With today's technology, however, those times are soon coming to an end. Manufacturers like Intel and AMD have stepped up their development and are now making processors for laptops that are quite comparable to those of desktops. This allows consumers who want portability to also have the speed and power they need.

The central or primary circuit board making up the complex computer system. Intel and AMD CPUs require their own motherboard chipsets and cannot be interchanged with each other; however, not all Intel or AMD CPUs will fit into a designated motherboard for that vendor. All CPUs have a certain "pin" or "socket" number, or simply a product name, which is also identified on a motherboard, certifying the board for the insertion of a certain CPU (i.e.: certified motherboard).

October serves as the transition between the back-to-school and winter holiday shopping seasons. The period between Black Friday and Christmas will ultimately define the success of the fourth quarter. However, these October sales results, as well as the well-documented rumor that Wal-Mart will offer a $398 AMD notebook and a $398 AMD desktop on Black Friday, indicate that AMD is in a stronger position to compete with Intel than it has been in past holiday seasons.
Looking forward, one can expect that AMD will attempt to replicate its October success throughout the all-important holiday season. According to Matt Sargent, Director of Research at Current Analysis, "AMD did the unthinkable by surpassing Intel in October. Continuing to hold this lead in the holiday season would be a colossal win for the company."
Apple' 1990s release of the iMac forever broke the tyranny of beige when it came to computer cases and put the idea of personalizing a computer into many, dare we say "envious, " PC hobbyists who were already building their own machines. While the vast majority of personal computers continue to be housed within dull, boring, beige cases, the last remaining archetype from the Jurassic days of the first IBM PCs (some twenty years ago) may be on the way out.

Desktop Computer But cost is king when it comes tothe U.S. consumer market going into the holiday season and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) looking at offering cheap computers to shoppers. If Dell Computer's (Nasdaq: DELL) reach is strong in retail, it pales in comparison to Wal-Mart as cost-conscious shoppers looking at PCs for the holidays will more likely buy cheaper brands at the nation's no. 1 retail chain and most likely, AMD is banking on that.
