Yet only about 5 percent of discarded PC's are being donated to charities or nonprofit groups, according to Dataquest, the market research arm of Gartner Inc. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 80 percent of discarded computer components will end up in landfills. And 130 million cellphones are expected to be discarded by 2005, according to Inform, an environmental group based in New York City.

The day finally came when John decided to donate his computer to a local charity and buy the laptop he had been saving for. To verify his data was gone, John reformatted his drive to erase personal and previously deleted files. John then charitably donated his old computer.

Laptop Computer Most nonprofit groups are looking for computers that have Pentium chips or the equivalent, although some would be happy to take older machines with 486 microprocessors.

BBC Castaway Broadcasting Enterprise Managed Hosting Solution To meet its requirements, the BBC chose to have the Castaway website hosted on Hostway’s managed server infrastructure. Although the BBC estimated a large number of viewers would log onto the website at the start of its lifecycle, it did not know how popular or busy the site could ultimately get. Consequently, Hostway decided to place Castaway’s “Remote Control” demand VMWare platform, allowing extra virtual servers to be added within minutes, and thereby seamlessly expanding server capacity if required.

Desktop Computer "Anything we can connect to the Internet we will find a home for," said Robert Lubell, who runs the Dare to Dream program at the TCI College of Technology in Manhattan. The program refurbishes donated computers and gives them to needy individuals as well as to hospitals and veterans' groups.

Notebooks Student volunteers are taught to repair and reprogram the donated machines, then to train the recipients to use them. "You get the hands-on training while you're doing community service; this I can put in my portfolio," said Allanna Laidlow, 21, a student at the college.

Lenovo To find a list of groups that recycle electronics or are looking for donations, check the E.P.A.'s Web site, www.epa.gov, or the site of the National Recycling Coalition at www.nrc-recycle.org. It lets people search by ZIP code for groups and businesses that accept old equipment.

Hard Drive Homes can be found for cellphones, too. Organizations that help victims of domestic abuse often want them for clients to use in emergencies. Groups like Donate a Phone, at www.donateaphone.org, and Collect- iveGood (www.collectivegood.com) accept and recycle phones, and many cellphone service providers, like AT&T, will take back phones for reuse or recycling.

Gateway To value donated PC's and electronic devices, many groups look to the Orion BlueBook, and say the Internal Revenue Service also accepts valuations from that source (www.orionbluebook.com). The Orion Research Corporation, which publishes the guide, charges $3.99 for each valuation. (It also appraises stereos, cameras, audio equipment, office copiers and televisions.) The Cristina Foundation also provides donors with valuations, at no charge.

Laptop Parts Because computers tend to lose their value quickly, donors should not expect big tax deductions. According to the Orion BlueBook, a Compaq Deskpro 4000 with a 200-megahertz Pentium chip, which had a list price of $3,720 in 1997, is worth only $12 to $19 today.

Software It's probably the biggest conundrum for us," said Kate Krebs, executive director of the National Recycling Coalition in Alexandria, Va. She said consumers were often distressed to find that "when we bought this thing, it was worth thousands of dollars and now we have to pay someone to take it back."

Hard Drives "I think you have to get over it," Ms. Krebs said. "Quite honestly, there are many products that do hit end of life. You need to admit it's over and properly dispose of them."

Electronics Ms. Krebs suggests checking the packaging on new products because it often includes information about how to dispose of old products. When in doubt, she said, ask the agency in charge of garbage pickups in your area.
