Intel Cut Prices on Older Chips

. (AXcess News) Reno, Intel Corp. ( INTC) is expected to cut prices on older Pentium chips by as much as 60 percent as newer manufacturing technology comes online, the chip maker said Friday. A spokesman for Intel said the chip maker had a more aggressive product and manufacturing ramp so the older chips are expected to sellout quickly to make way for new products.

First up is Intel, which kicks off the tech sector's earnings season after the markets close Tuesday. AMD follows on Thursday. in terms of the global demand for computer chips, their prices, and the ruthless market share battle between Intel and AMD ( AMD , Fortune 500 ). Research firm iSuppli cited various factors related to a weakening economy when it recently cut its growth forecast for worldwide semiconductor sales to 4% from 7.5%.

Laptop Computers Intel's strategy in dumping its older stock of Pentium chips is partly due to competition from Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) for market share. By selling out its older inventory of chips Intel hopes to keep buyers from switching to AMD's semiconductor products.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computer Intel holds about 80 percent of the world's micro processor market for PCs and plans on keeping that foothold.

Desktop Computer The move to sell out its older inventory is supported by its advances in manufacturing smaller, more powerful microprocessors.

Notebooks The new more powerful, energy saving chips are more economical to produce as they can be cut from a single piece of silicon, Intel explains.

Lenovo Shares of Intel were up 8 cents at $17.19. AMD's shares rose 3 cents to $27.06. Both semiconductor manufacturers shares climbed on news of Texas instruments (NYSE: TXN) releasing encouraging mid-quarter revenue guidance which lifted the semiconductor sector overall.
