Date 3/16/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsFour Luther students were honored at the Sigma Tau Delta conference held in Savannah, Ga., from March 2-5. Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society, holds annual regional and national conferences where select students can present their work.
The trip to Savannah was made by Peter Scholl, professor of English and sponsor of Luther's Sigma Tau Delta chapter, Diane Scholl, professor of English, Peter Schletty ('01), and Steve Markey ('01).
The students were selected to participate in the conference on the basis of papers they submitted to a distinguished board of Sigma Tau Delta members.
Jennifer Kuderer ('01) and Sarah Norquist ('00) received scholarships at the conference.
Kuderer was awarded a $500 scholarship for placing 4th in the Junior Scholarship competition. Norquist received a $500 scholarship for placing 3rd in the Award for Future Teachers category.
Markey and Schletty were selected to present papers at the conference. These presentations were made to an audience of professors, graduate students and other students who gave feedback and engaged in discussion about the papers.
"It was an honor to be selected as a presenter," said Schletty.
A former Luther student, Michelle Ellringer ('99) also received awards at the conference.
Ellringer was honored for a personal essay published in a Sigma Tau Delta journal. She received a $750 award for best personal essay and another $750 award for best overall work in any genre.
Both Peter Scholl and Schletty noted the added perk of having the conference in beautiful Savannah, Ga. The group from Luther spent much of their free time sightseeing in the city.
Peter Scholl felt the convention was a good experience for everyone.
"The Convention gives students an exciting taste of what fun English can be," noted Scholl.
Luther will host the Regional Sigma Tau Delta conference Nov. 3-4, 2000.
