BEA Leads Industry in Java Performance Benchmark Records

BEA Leads Industry in Java Performance Benchmark Records

SAN JOSE, Calif.March 14, 2005BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software, today announced BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 has set new performance records, topping previous results in the dual-node performance category using the industry-standard SPECjAppServer2002 benchmark.
This independently designed and validated industry-standard benchmark measures the performance of application servers running typical business applications. The benchmark is specifically designed to test J2EE in a standard platform for development of portable, scalable, multi-tier enterprise applications. The latest results featuring BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 further demonstrate a long-standing tradition for BEA of providing the best combination of price and performance over the competition.

The new BEA SPECjAppServer2002 records include:

* Fastest performance of any 4-CPU system in the dual-node category. Running BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 and BEA WebLogic JRockit 1.4.2 on an Intel Itanium 2 processor-based HP Integrity rx4640 server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux delivers 1710.23 TOPS@DualNode with a price-to-performance ratio of only $115.72 USD/TOPS@DualNode.
* Fastest performance in the dual-node category. BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 on Sun Fire E6900 servers with UltraSPARC IV 1.2GHz processors running Solaris, delivers 4220.39 Total Operations Per Second (TOPS@DualNode) and 834.98 $/TOPS@DualNode. BEA WebLogic running Solaris holds the top result; delivering more than twice the performance of the nearest closest competitor in this category.

The new records clearly illustrate an ongoing commitment from BEA and its partners to providing performance and total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) advantages for customers. Spanning the years, BEA has achieved world-record performance benchmarks on a wide variety of hardware, operating systems and databases, including: systems from HP, Dell, Sun and others; HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows operating systems; processors varying from PA-RISC to Intel-based 32-bit and 64-bit to Solaris; and a range of databases including Oracle, Microsoft SQL, and MySQL.

BEA continues to provide the very best combination of price and performance available to J2EE-enabled enterprises. Since the establishment of the SPECjAppServer benchmark, BEA has consistently held top scores in both the dual-node and multi-node categories, said Ed Whelan, Director, Engineering, BEA Systems. The quality of our technology continues to drive the industry forward and provide customers with the most sophisticated J2EE platforms available.

"Together, BEA and Intel are dedicated to an ongoing performance optimization program for large-scale, enterprise-critical applications," said Jason Waxman, Director of Enterprise Platforms Marketing, Intel Corporation. "These three new performance records demonstrate that leading performance for BEA WebLogic Server can be achieved on Intel Itanium 2 processor-based servers."

"HP Integrity systems are designed for the most demanding mission critical workloads, and deliver superior performance and reliability said Vish Mulchand, Director Server Marketing, Business Critical Servers, HP. The HP Integrity rx4640 server together with BEA WebLogic Server provide a superior solution for scale-out, mission critical J2EEenabled enterprises.

"Red Hat and BEA present a very compelling value proposition to the enterprise customer with a tightly integrated solution. This benchmark further validates the price/performance leadership that BEA WebLogic Server and BEA WebLogic JRockit on Red Hat Enterprise Linux is able to deliver," said Deb Woods, Vice President of Product Marketing at Red Hat.
