Critics: Pohatcong Deal Gives Ground To Builders

Laptop Battery Local environmentalists are gearing up to fight township officials over a proposed settlement that would put another 130 homes along High Street.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The settlement -- which has already been approved by the planning board and is expected to be approved by council on Tuesday night -- concerns Victoria Ridge, a 122-home development slated for 84 acres off Route 519.

Notebooks Mayor Stephen Babinsky, who voted to approve the settlement as a planning board member, said he expects to give it his stamp of approval once again.

Lenovo He said he'd rather have 130 age-restricted homes than 122 single family homes, which bring children.

Hard Drive "I think it's super," he said. "It will make everyone's lives easier."

Travelstar Planning Board Chairman John Gardner agreed, also pointing to the schoolchildren factor. The township pays about $9,000 a year for each child that attends Pohatcong School, he said.

Gateway If Victoria Ridge was built as planned, it could have brought 260 more children into the school system. At $9,000 each, that would have been a $2 million-plus cost, according to Gardner.

Laptop Parts "This deal is a no-brainer," he said.

Software But environmentalists say the deal is not as wonderful as officials claim.

Hard Drives About 25 concerned citizens and members of the Phillipsburg Riverview Organization gathered this week to create an anti-sprawl action plan.

Electronics Their concerns centered around the impact another nearly 800 homes from the age-restricted community and EAI will have on High Street traffic and the nearby PRO bird sanctuary.

Canon They said all these new houses will make the birds vulnerable to predatory birds and also reluctant to nest.

Desktop Pc "That's if they don't die from the exhaust fumes," added Ken Schick, who's running for Pohatcong council.

Desktop Computers PRO chairman Mike King said the settlement, if approved, also will set a bad precedent for other farmers.

Think Pad "We'll have farmers wanting to put up hundreds of houses in exchange for putting their land in the preservation program," he said. "It's an awful idea."

Repair The group planned to go door to door this weekend in Pohatcong and Alpha distributing flyers and urging residents to attend Tuesday's meeting.

Data Recovery "When people lead, leaders follow," PRO member Reggie Regrut said, adding it would be premature for council to vote on the settlement.

Cisco Victoria Ridge has been in the works for more than 10 years, but a series of lawsuits have kept it stagnant. In court, the debate centered on whether the project should be subject to the current or prior zoning laws.

Keyboard In April 2000, an application for final approval of Victoria Ridge was submitted, but the township planning board determined it was incomplete.

Monitor Two months later, Pohatcong amended its zoning laws, changing the minimum lot sizes for developments from 10,800 square feet to 5 acres.

Desktop Because the application was deemed incomplete, officials argued Victoria Ridge should be subject to new zoning.

Infosys The owners of the land, Martin Resnick and Toll Brothers, disagreed and filed suit in state Superior Court.

Refurbished Laptops In June, an appellate judge sided with the plaintiffs and ruled Victoria Ridge should fall under the old zoning. The judge also ordered the township planning board to hold hearings on completeness and final approval.

Wipro The township still is appealing the judge's decision, according to Regrut.

Lap Top "There's a chance we may not have to have any of these homes," he said.

Refurbished Pohatcong resident Maureen Conway said she'd rather see her tax dollars go to legal fees than the extra costs that will result from new developments.

Memory "Fight it however long it takes," she said. "When people say it's a done deal, it's not. The houses aren't built yet."

Intel With a court order, Gardner argued the houses are as good as built. He commended the environmentalists for their optimism, but said it's false hope.

As400 We ve appealed every decision in this case and we ve lost every appeal. This is the best we can get, Gardner said. Everybody wishes it wouldn t be built, but that s just not the case.
