Once in a while kind people who want our cash take us out
for drinks, dinner, lunch, that kind of thing. One such lunch
was held recently when two exceptionally nice guys from the
excellent Email Vision took me to lunch at
Texture, London’s hottest new opening
(they’d let me choose!). It was a hugely impressive
lunch, not just because we had some serious wines - a
comparison of New World Pinot Noir with Burgundian - but
because the food, service and room were spot on. Having always
fancied myself as a restaurateur in the making, I enjoy seeing
places shortly after they’ve opened as you see them
‘raw’. But I’m putting those aspirations on
hold for a bit; my heart was wrenched on the owners’
behalves as the place was almost empty. I couldn’t
understand it - the restaurant has been done up with no expense
spared, it’s in an elegant high-ceilinged room with
magnificent plasterwork. And the food and service were some of
the best I’ve had for a while. The founders (pictured),
Agnar Sverrisson and Xavier Rousset (ex-Ruinart Sommelier of
the Year), are both prot g s of the saintly Raymond Blanc of Le
Manoir. All the ingredients were right, including the
first-class lamb and cod that I ate. Whilst the cooking verges
on poncy, with foams and gels and the like, it was clearly
exceptionally talented. I enjoyed being told the name of the
Breton who made the butter by the knowledgeable waiters. And at

What are these poor people doing wrong Pretty much nothing
as far as I could see. Go and support them. It’s hardly a
charitable hardship when the food is so good. Postscript: I
think the only restaurant that can guarantee massive custom
every evening of the year must be the superb
Nayaab in Parson’s Green, which
I’m ashamed to say I’ve only just discovered.
It’s staggeringly good so deserves its reputation and

September 11th, 2007Cheese making in RagusaBlanche summers in Italy usually, before returning for the
London season in the autumn. Here she imparts some of her local
know-how on how the Sicilians do cheese.
One lunchtime we were presented with the regional Ragusan
cheese plate which, somewhat surprisingly, consisted of slices
of fried cheese served with honey. The outside of the cheese
was golden and crisp, the centre smooth and melting. The
flavour was slightly salt, in a deliciously savoury way, which
was perfect with the sweet honey. laptop computer
Determined to discover more about these different cheeses,
we set off into Ragusa town to visit what was thought of as the
finest cheese shop in the area. It called Casa di
Formaggio and sells mainly cheese, along with various
regional produce like wild fennel salami. Behind the shop are
rooms full of cheeses in the process of being finished, so as
well as selling them, it participates in the production by
helping the various smaller local farms to finish their
cheeses. Not dissimilar to how Neal Yard operates in

Tomasso is charming and quite round, no doubt due to his
massive cheese enthusiasm. Once he realised how interested we
were he kept darting around the shop, slicing off various
samples of different varieties and ages for us to try.

It is sweltering when we arrive midday at Catania airport.
At this time of year there is no escaping the heat. We stop in
a caf to buy water and panini; the cabinets are full of
extravagant marzipan confections, imitations of fruits and
miniature vegetables, moulded and colourfully painted. The
simple panini we choose are ceremoniously wrapped in printed
paper and tied with a ribbon and bow, like a gift. hard drive
Sicily is country of extremes. There is both grandeur and
delapidation. Huge baroque sandstone churches crown the tops of
hills in towns while on the road we pass hundreds of neglected
building projects, scruffy houses and shacks. The heat is
intense and the parched, burnt fields stretch into the
distance, over the rolling countryside, intersected by
beautifully maintained dry-stone walls. However in the oasis of
our garden, the fruit trees flourish: quinces, pomegranates and
heady mulberries hanging from their branches. Read more

September 6th, 2007Thoughts of Bill Bryson in the Millennium
Dome
I was reminded of an excellent and amusing passage in Bill
Bryson Notes from a Small Island the other day as I
sat down for lunch at an unfortunate place in the Millennium
Dome. Since the exciting-looking eateries of Iqbal Wahhab (of
Roast in Borough Market fame) are not yet open, I wasn
exactly spoilt for interesting choice. Don misunderstand me
though there was ample choice but, sempro o mesmo,
flabby pizza with bizarre toppings, mediocre and rubbery sushi,
American burger joints, and ret cater to all tastes by mixing
everything up in a sugar and salt fest in the hope of pandering
to the lowest common denominator. Revolting. But so was the
place where I ate they treated me to Eggs Benedict smothered in
malt vinegar weird gateway
Anyway, here what Bryson had to say: Given the nature of
the hotel I ‡ expected the menu to feature items like
brown Windsor soup and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, but of
course things have moved on in the hotel trade. The menu now
was richly endowed with ten-guinea words that you wouldn have
seen on a menu ten years ago ¥oisettes ¯artare
™uxelle —oulis ¯imbale and written in a
curious inflated language with eccentric capitalizations. I
had, and I quote, ianned Galia Melon and Cumbrian Air Dried Ham
served with a Mixed leaf Salad followed by iillet Steak served
with a crushed Black Peppercorn Sauce flamed in Brandy and
finished with Cream which together were nearly as pleasurable

Despite a grey summer, our greenhouse crops are doing
surprisingly well. Just a few hours of sun is enough to ripen a
cluster of tomatoes and heat the whole greenhouse, filling it
with the appetising scent of tomato foliage and basil.
Aubergines are also thriving; the hot April burst them into
flower and those flowers have been steadily producing firm
purple fruits ever since. Green peppers have been slower but
are swelling now and hot green chillis called vinocchio Nose
are growing longer and longer. Even our small honeydew melons
are ripening now, proving just how protective a greenhouse
