Decorah Folk Music to Fill Storre Theatre
Date 3/13/1997 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CultureAt 7 p.m. on Saturday, local musicians will take the stage in Storre Theatre for a fun-filled evening of folk music. Proceeds from the show, emceed by Luther Director of Orchestras Jeff Stirling and Kathy Reed-Maxfield, will go to Opportunity Homes, a residential program for adults with disabilities, and Happy Ear Productions, promoters of regional and international folk music. Luther's own Pastor Blair will perform along with Seniors Joe Brekke and Paul Odenbach.
Nine years ago, Decorah-based Happy Ear Productions made plans to bring some well-known folk artists to Decorah. In conjunction with these big-name acts, the group organized an open stage in which local musicians could perform.
After a successful four years of open stage, Happy Ear decided to discontinue sponsoring the event. International Student Office Staffmember Amy Webber, who had worked as director of Opportunity Homes, decided to organize the event herself as a fundraiser for the residential program.
The following year, Opportunity Homes and Happy Ear Productions began working together on the event, a partnership that has continued for four years.
The event is no longer an open stage, but a fully programmed show. Admission for Saturday's show is $5.
According to Webber, "Luther students often miss the event because it tends to land during spring break." However, she encourages students to attend for a "light-hearted, fun evening."
