Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products, was quoted as saying Google had doubled its Gmail storage capacity "to make sure storage was no longer an issue for web mail users", though she neglected to say which users, Google's or Yahoo Considering the number of users Gmail has verses Yahoo! there was no reason to increase free web mail users storage to an unheard of 2 gigabytes, unless competition called for upping the ante. Which in this case seems most likely.
Thinkpad When the news of Google attempt on webmail swept like a virus throughout the news channels I was definitely curious. Being April Fools day everything on the internet became a bit less believable for about 24 hours but I read on. Reading that gmail planned to offer one gigabyte of storage to each user really had me sitting on the fence. It almost seemed too good to be true, but then again we were talkingabout the mighty Google who had taken the web by storm with it search technology that somehow retrieved the results you wanted with amazing accuracy. I recalled hearing that google was investigating mail earlier in the year, but one gigabyte - compared to the 2 and 4 megabytes that Hotmail and Yahoo offer - amazing!

Desktop Computer First there is the familiar Google web search box up the top, but instead of just searching the web it searches your mail! And just like the web search there are a multitude of options to target your search. It no longer necessary to organise your mail - but if that how you like it you still can in the form of labels. You define the labels just like you would a folder in a normal email application but with GMail you can apply more than one label to an email, making it much more efficient since you don have to decide how to define an email with more than one topic.
Notebooks I a broadband user, but the speed is still impressive. Because of the Javascript interface you don have to wait for a new page to load everytime you click on something. It really feels like you are using a normal application on your desktop, when in fact your viewing data coming from the other side of the world - well for us aussies anyway
Lenovo The interface is nice just like most Google sites are. It easy to navigate to where you want to go. The new feature that hasn really been a feature Ie heard of in other webmail programs is the keyboard navigation. There is pretty much a substitute button for any link on the page - reply, forward, report spam, archive. While I not using it since I use Firefox and prefer the search functionality this feature could be very nice for the power-users or people who just prefer not to use the mouse.
Hard Drive Having forwarded my domain based email address towards GMail I was wondering where the occasional Spam message was going. Moving over to the Spam folder I was pleasantly surprised to see a few of the Nigerian scam rotting away. There is also a eport as Spam?option that you can apply to any email. I not totally sure how this works yet as none of the Spam has managed to taint my Inbox but it looks like it will customize the filter so that future messages like it will be filtered. On the topic of spam, one neat feature I haven seen before (I sure it not unique to Google but it new to me ..) is the ability to use suffixes on your email address. For example, username+couldbespam@gmail.com could be used to signup to a site that you think could be a bit dodgey, and if it turns out to be you can just filter it out.
Travelstar The ads which have been critisied by many are inobtrusive but if you decide to read them they are in fact based on the keywords in the email your viewing. They will only appear on the pages where you are viewing an email, the Inbox and Search pages are unaffected.
Gateway Having used GMail for a few days it looks like it will be quite a good free mail solution by the time the public release comes around. It has brought alot of good features together into a single program and the mammoth storage only helps. It won be for everyone but nothing is, for the average internet user wanting a free email account it will be a good alternative to existing options.
