Laptop Battery PPL Corp.'s Martins Creek electric generation plant is in violation of the federal Clean Air Act and should either be forced to comply or shut down, U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli said.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers The senator, who recently moved to Hunterdon County from Bergen County, is asking U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator and former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman to start a formal inquiry into the Martins Creek plant as it relates to the Clean Air Act. A letter seeking that goal should trigger a formal review of the plant, Torricelli said.

Desktop Computer Republican Freeholder John DiMaio said he and a delegation of county officials met with Whitman's chief of staff last year and have yet to receive a formal response to their concerns.
Notebooks "Unofficially, they told us there's nothing they can do," said Freeholder James DeBosh, a Democrat.
Lenovo PPL has applied for a permit to build a new natural gas plant adjacent to the Martins Creek plant. Company officials claim this project is a new plant and not an expansion. If it was to expand the plant, PPL would have to bring the entire Martins Creek operation into compliance with current clean air standards.
Hard Drive There is a provision of the Clean Air Act that allows old coal-burning power plants like Martins Creek to continue operating outside of federal regulations. But that provision requires power plants to upgrade their entire operation when expanding the plant.
Travelstar "Bringing the plants into fill compliance will cost these companies millions of dollars. They will resist," Torricelli said. "But not being in compliance also costs millions of dollars" due to health problems and other environmental effects, he said.
Gateway In 1999, the Martins Creek plant emitted 19,529 tons of sulfur dioxide, a respiratory irritant blamed for contributing to asthma and bronchitis. The environmental commissions in Belvidere and White Township, both of which are downwind from the 25-acre Martins Creek site, have issued studies in the last year showing asthma rates in those areas to be twice the state average.
Laptop Parts "It is extraordinary that of all locations in New Jersey that have persistent air problems, that Warren County would be among those listed. Most people would expect that along the Hudson River or near Philadelphia," Torricelli said. "There is only one reason pollution does not respect boundaries."
Software Torricelli also discussed a bill he is co-sponsoring with Sen. Jim Jeffords, an independent from Vermont, that would require a 75 percent reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions by 2007. The bill is an alternative to President Bush's Clean Skies Initiative, which would not implement stricter emissions standards until 2018. Torricelli called the administration's plan "a poor excuse for an environmental law."
Hard Drives But there is still a problem with PPL, Reliant and other energy companies, who are "adamant that they will not clean up their plants," said Al Siess of Upper Saucon Township. He is a member of an environmental group called Pennsylvania Interfaith Global Climate Change.
Electronics At a public meeting at Blairstown High School last week, PPL and Reliant "publicly stated that they will not put scrubbers on the old plants. They feel they are in compliance," said Carol Cook, chairwoman of the Blairstown Environmental Commission.
Canon Scrubbers are installed in emissions towers to filter harmful chemicals out of power plant emissions.
Desktop Pc It would cost $120 million, about what a power company makes in a day or a day and a half to install scrubbers and bring Martins Creek into compliance, said Tom Palmieri, president of the Blairstown Business Association and a Democratic candidate for the Blairstown Township Committee.
Desktop Computers "It's not fair, it's not right" that PPL will not comply with the Clean Air Act, Torricelli said. "The technology exists and responsible companies are using it."
Think Pad PPL spokesman Andy Hallmark said the plant is in compliance with the Clean Air Act.
Repair "Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to run our plant," he said. "Martins Creek has an emissions standard that is in place to protect human health in the area."
Data Recovery PPL is voluntarily contributing funds for several air monitoring stations in Belvidere and White Township, which are scheduled to be operational by August. The majority of the funding for the $550,000 project comes from Roche Vitamins through a fine paid to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for violations of emissions standards.
