Factiva to Support IBM's Open Text Analytics Framework

Government and Enterprise Sectors Will Benefit from New Solutions to Drive Productivity

New York (August 8, 2005) - Factiva, a Dow Jones and Reuters Company, today announced its support of the Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) developed by IBM through the creation of a Factiva data listener, a technology tool that allows Factiva content to be used by UIMA-compliant applications.
UIMA is a recently announced open framework for creating analytic applications that process text from unstructured content and enable better interoperability among analytics software and enterprise applications.

Additionally, Factiva has teamed with two UIMA-compliant software firms to develop role-specific applications that leverage this investment by Factiva: Palo Alto, California-based Attensity and Waltham, Massachusetts-based ClearForest.

Attensity and Factiva have joined forces to help analysts in the government sector uncover hidden patterns in information provided by Factiva and other sources. Factiva provides content from more than 9,000 business news and information sources. This content can be combined with information from other sources, including watch lists field analyst reports, ship manifests, or surveillance transcripts. The resulting analysis will help identify relationships and trends, which could reveal possible security issues previously difficult to detect.

We look forward to working with Factiva to deliver comprehensive solutions to government agencies in order to speed response to critical issues and underscore the value of our text analytics applications, said Craig Norris, chief executive officer, Attensity. We see great potential for joint opportunities in the commercial sector as well.

Factiva is also working with ClearForest to deliver a solution that provides prospecting triggers for salespeople. The solution can help business users recognize patterns or trends in corporate earnings and other relevant information to assess cross-sell and business development opportunities, as well as identify people and relationships for prospecting.

Enabling business professionals to analyze both structured data and unstructured text provides them with a competitive advantage and the ability to make decisions effectively, said Marty Siewert, general manager of enterprise operations at ClearForest. Additionally, organizations are increasingly looking to business intelligence for new ways to improve business, and our relationship with Factiva will help to provide a solution that does just that.

Our collaboration with leading text analytics software firms supports Factivas dedication to empower organizations to integrate business intelligence solutions into their workflow so that users can make better decisions faster, said Greg Gerdy, vice president and director of channel marketing and strategy, Factiva. IBMs framework equips Factiva and its UIMA-compliant partners to serve key roles and multiple vertical markets.

IBM is pleased that Factiva is leveraging IBM WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition in its collaborating with Attensity and ClearForest to deliver these important new text analytics solutions that demonstrate the value of making search, text analytics and enterprise applications more interoperable, said Nelson Mattos, distinguished engineer, vice president strategy, IBM Information Integration. The powerful combination of these technologies, Factivas content and IBMs OmniFind Edition platform for processing unstructured content for knowledge discovery and enterprise search will deliver a new level of value to the government and business users.
