Norse capture conference championship
Date 11/5/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsThe streak remains unbroken as the Luther men's soccer team clinched the 1998 IIAC Championship. The championship was earned after a 4-0 sweep of Buena Vista and a 1-0 victory over Simpson in the championship game. Entering the IIAC Conference Tournament held Oct. 30-31 the Norse had posted an impressive record of 18-3-1 overall, 11-0-0 in conference play.
The championship-hungry Norse opened the tournament facing the Bueana Vista Beavers, who were soon sent packing as Ryan Martin ('02) ignited the nets, putting the Norse up 1-0. Sophomore Josh Korth nailed a shot assisted by Derek Altorfer ('01) to finish off the first half with the Norse up 2-0.
The second half proved to be just as productive when David Pendergast ('02) directed Korth's pass by the Beaver's goalie minutes into the action. Kjetil Gunderson ('02) capped off the Luther first-round victory by chipping in a shot assisted by Tory Jacobs ('00).
Bob Chaplin ('99) recorded the Norse shutout deflecting four shots on goal. The 4-0 victory over Buena Vista was awarded with a berth in the championship game against Simpson College on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Although the score was low, the intensity was high on Saturday afternoon. Both Luther and Simpson battled the full 90 minutes without giving any slack to the opposition. It was midway through the first half when Gregg Landmark ('00) drilled one in putting the Norse up 1-0. This first half goal eventually became the game-winning shot as the second half proved to be scoreless.
Chaplin added a final shutout to his resume this season as he held the Storm scoreless by icing nine shot attempts.
This 1-0 victory emphatically declared the Luther men's soccer team the 1998 IIAC Champions. With the IIAC championship under their belt the Norse will head to the Division III National Tournament to take on the best in the nation.
