Cyclades Showcases AlterPath Manager with OpenIPMI at LinuxWorld San Francisco 2004
Exhibit Shows Secure, Centralized Serial-Over-LAN Access with AlterPath(TM) Manager, Builds on Previous IPMI Support Available on AlterPath ACS Console Servers
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2004-- Cyclades Corporation, a leader in IT infrastructure management for data centers and branch offices worldwide, is demonstrating its AlterPath Manager platform now integrating IPMI support in booth #1359 at LinuxWorld today. Visitors can see a real-world application of the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard, which is now included in many new servers. Cyclades' exhibit shows the first secure, centralized serial-over-LAN deployments that provide IPMI access. The display builds on Cyclades experience integrating IPMI support into its AlterPath ACS console servers.
IPMI uses a separate processor embedded in the server to enable IT managers to access, monitor and reboot servers that are unavailable due to application, hardware or operating system errors. Rather than adopt a proprietary architecture, Cyclades is using OpenIPMI, the Open Source implementation of the standard IPMI protocol, and is also contributing to its development. Until recently, access to the IPMI interface was only available through a server's serial console port, often through a console server like the AlterPath ACS. Cyclades' demonstration shows secure, centralized access via the Ethernet. Because the AlterPath Manager supports enterprise security standards, including server-based authentication protocols, organizations can use the Cyclades management gateway to ensure all access is controlled through their existing security frameworks, in accordance with their security policies.
"IPMI deployed over Ethernet provides businesses with a powerful administrative tool, yet the lack of integration with most enterprise, server-based security systems limits its value," said Marcio Saito, Cyclades' CTO. "Our demonstration illustrates an effective way to consolidate access through our AlterPath Manager, while ensuring compliance with the organizations' security architecture. By including centralized IPMI access in the AlterPath Manager, our customers have a flexible way to securely integrate this powerful new technology into their IT management infrastructure. True to our Linux heritage, Cyclades stands apart from proprietary vendors by providing our customers with the flexibility of an Open Source implementation of IPMI, without locking them into a proprietary solution."
Out-of-band devices provide IT managers with an alternative way to access and restore infrastructure elements that have lost network connectivity. The AlterPath Manager enables IT infrastructure managers to access and control their out-of-band appliances, which include serial console servers, KVM switches and intelligent power distribution units (IPDUs), from a single unified interface.
By integrating a secure gateway for IPMI and similar hardware management protocols with the AlterPath Manager, Cyclades demonstrates its continued commitment to support emerging management technologies, helping businesses to reduce their operational costs while increasing the productivity of their IT assets. This new AlterPath Manager's OpenIPMI support also enhances the value of the IPMI technology standard by adding additional console management features such as a logging, automation, and view consolidation.
About Cyclades
Cyclades solutions are used by data centers and branch offices to create a secure alternative (out-of-band) path to remotely detect and correct infrastructure problems, reducing business risks and costs while maximizing service availability and operational efficiency. Cyclades' AlterPath(TM) family of solutions -- including console servers, KVM, power control and system management products -- complements traditional network management for total control and operational consolidation of the infrastructure. More than 8,000 companies depend on Cyclades' technology to automate maintenance, incident detection and recovery activities at large installations of centralized and/or distributed networks.
