Nintendo Needs To Go Online

Nintendo Needs To Go Online

Laptop Battery Nintendo needs to go online.

Youve heard these words muttered by GameCube loyalists, Nintendo fanboys, hardcore gamers and other Nintendo-centric gamers all throughout the world. In fact, the want for online by some Nintendo fans is so passionate that it isnt entirely odd for flame wars to break out on many of todays most popular gaming message boards. But for a flame war to take place, you must have two different sides to the story. Simply put, the community of Nintendo gamers is divided as far as online gaming goes.

Some see online the way Nintendo does. It isnt profitable or so Nintendo claims. It isnt the future of gaming. There are quite a few arguments as to why Nintendo needs to keep its focus on other features, such as its famed GBA connectivity, which focuses around networking Nintendos handheld success, the Game Boy Advance, with its next-generation home console, the Nintendo GameCube, and not on online gaming. Either way you spin it, there are reasons from both sides of the community on the matter of online gaming and the GameCube, including those who dont want the GameCube to go online, for one reason or another.

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow is Ubisoft's daring entry into the world of stealth online play

But on the other side of the fence are Nintendo fans that desperately want to take their GameCube online. I suppose you could say I am one of them. After tasting online on Microsofts Xbox and its online service, Xbox Live, I would absolutely be thrilled with a similar service for the GameCube. And like those who dont want their GameCube online, there are many others out there, like myself, that want to play their Cubes online.

With this said, perhaps, for a moment, consider this. Ubisoft recently released its sequel to Splinter Cell, its realistic stealth-based masterpiece from 2002, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. However, the company has taken a very innovative approach with its sequel. Instead of churning out a generic and predictable sequel to Splinter Cell, the developer has included one of the most innovative modes in a video game in the last few years, an online stealth multiplayer mode.

The online mode is so genre-shaping, in fact, that it will probably be mimicked in the years to come from several developers. It wouldnt be surprising for a future Metal Gear Solid game to feature an online mode in the near future. Indeed, Pandora Tomorrows online play is so well done that it is worth purchasing to experience it alone. This brings me to my point. Why should someone buy the GameCube version of Pandora Tomorrow when it releases later this summer? There is no true incentive for a gamer to do so. With the Xbox version, players get not only an excellent single player adventure, but also an online mode with an immeasurable amount of lasting appeal. The GameCube version will only feature half of Ubisofts original package.

Smart gamers, unless they only own a GameCube, will likely purchase the Xbox version; not giving the Cube port that releases in July a second look. But why should they take a second glance at the GameCube version? The Xbox version is the better deal. It gives you more bang for your buck.
