Jass at Lincoln Center Sextet to Perform

Date 11/2/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & Culture

'Jazz at Lincoln Center Sextet' will be returning to Luther on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL.

The group will be in the Decorah and Calmar area from Wednesday through Saturday, Nov. 1-4, conducting residencies. These residencies consist of ten clinics, demonstrations, and mini-concerts.

Events open to the public include a "Jazz for Young People" session Saturday afternoon from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Decorah Public Library and a master class with the Luther College Jazz Band I Thursday from 3:30-4:20 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.

The residencies combine instruction, musical performance and conversation to educate people about the different aspects of jazz music: jazz history, jazz appreciation, improvisation, performance techniques and career development.

The sextet also provides educational materials to prepare teachers, students and the community for performances and to promote jazz exploration.

At the concert Saturday evening, the sextet, under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, will showcase many aspects of jazz music. Their repertory ranges from historical compositions to commissioned works by some of the greatest jazz composers such as Benny Carter, Wayne Shorter, and Marsalis.

They will play compositions and arrangements by such legends as Duke Ellington, County Basie, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Mary Lou Williams, among others.

This year, Jazz at Lincoln Center is honoring Louis Armstrong, the first great instrumental jazz soloist and the father of jazz singing. The concert and residencies will highlight Armstrong's influence on jazz and American culture.

The six members of Jazz at Lincoln Center are Marcus Printup, trumpet; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Wess Anderson, saxophone; Farid Barron, piano; Rodney Whitaker, bass; and Carl Allen, drums. All six are professional musicians who have taught privately and led workshops in high schools, colleges and conservatories across the country.

The ensemble is the world's largest not-for-profit arts organization committed to promoting the appreciation and understanding of jazz through performance, education and presentation. Jazz at Lincoln Center uses its resident orchestra and a variety of distinguished guests to produce programs for all audiences that include concerts, national and international tours, lectures, film programs, master classes, and workshops.

Their weekly National Public Radio series, "Jazz from Lincoln Center," which is hosted by Ed Bradley, is carried by more than 200 stations across the country.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Sextet is part of Luther's Center Stage Series put on by the Performing Arts Committee. The next event will be "A Scottish Christmas" on Dec. 8.
