Microsoft Sept 1, 2004 (AXcess News/SP) New York - It's the antithesis of "Murphy's Law", the proposition that anything will go wrong that can. In the semiconductor industry, it has been known for about 40 years as "Moore's Law", named for Gordon Moore, co-founder of semiconductor giant Intel (NASDAQ: INTC).In the 1960's, Moore predicted that the speed of computer chips would double, or the prices would fall by half, every 18 months. It is a theory that has held to the present day, as we have watched technology get faster, smaller, easier to use and cheaper. But, even with the latest 65-nanometre technology that Intel is developing - and hopes to market in droves next year - there is a sense that development of technology can go only so far before it "runs out of gas". Moore himself admitted such a fear in a 2001 Newsweek interview.

Laptop Computer The curve for different semiconductor companies has dipped downward in an almost uniform manner. There are, however, signs from some devoted watchers of the industry that a corner is about to be turned.
"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."
Desktop Computer Companies like Intel and Texas Instruments are rushing to market 65-nanometre technology - the latest step up from the current 90-nanometre. Fact is, though, that the rollout for such new products is costly.Advertisement
Notebooks One expert put it thus: if $30 million in costs are assumed to get a new chip sampling on 90-nm technology in two-and-a-half years, as well as 50 percent gross margins, it would require $60 million of revenue just to recover the investment. Not all companies have those deep pockets.
Lenovo But smaller semi companies have an alternative: to produce niche products for specialized industries. One is Perfisans Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB: PFNH), which, late last month, delivered its new ENA 1001 System-On-Chip (SOC) integrated circuits to makers of PC Motherboards in the Far East, technology that would greatly enhance the speed of computer systems, Gigabit chips which run 10 times faster than conventional Ethernet chips.
Hard Drive It's hoped that Perfisans' story is not atypical, given that it has found a way out of its doldrums. But investors in general have been spooked by reports of higher inventories among semiconductor companies. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which measures the sector's health, hit a new 52-week low in the third week of August.
Travelstar However, with the autumn comes the peak time for semiconductor manufacturing, which is when some analysts suspect an upswing may take place.
Gateway One company hoping for this upswing is
Laptop Parts Massachusetts-based LTX Corporation, which reported improved sales and net income for the period. That's a relief from the dismal figures for fiscal 2003, which were profoundly in the red.
Software LTX (NASDAQ: LTXX) chalks up this improvement to increased production of second-generation Fusion systems and a greater share of the subcontract test market. It is also a rival to Perfisans in the SOC market.Certainly, its stock price needs a spark, just coming off 52-week lows of just over $5.00, far from the hay days of late January, when its shares drew more than $20. Perhaps the improved bottom line and the semblance of stability it provides could be just the tonic.Another bargain may be found in Nu Horizons Electronics (NASDAQ: NUHC), a leading distributor of active and passive components based out of Melville, New York. Its most recent quarter, which ended with June, saw a 62% increase in sales over the same period the year before, and a bottom line in the black by $1.1 million or seven cents a share, compared to a loss of over $800,000 in the same quarter the year before.Officials with NUHC are optimistic that analysts' views hold for much of the industry, that demand will eventually pick up. For Nu Horizons, too, has had its problems, hitting a 52-week low for the year of $6.22 in late August, about half its 52-week peak in late January.Source: Source Press
