Exelon-PSEG Deal To Result In 900 NJ Job Cuts

Laptop Battery The proposed merger of Public Service Enterprise Group and Exelon will result in the elimination of 900 jobs in New Jersey, most of them at the PSEG unit that operates three nuclear power plants in Salem County.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The $12 billion deal announced Monday, which would create the country's largest power supplier, also will eliminate 200 jobs in Pennsylvania and another 300 jobs in Illinois, according to Exelon Chief Executive John Rowe.

Laptop Computers Exelon, the owner of the nation's largest fleet of nuclear plants, including Oyster Creek in Ocean County, is planning to send a team of 24 senior managers to oversee daily operations at PSEG's three nuclear power plants in South Jersey beginning in January. Public Service will pay Exelon $3 million under the contract, which has incentives that could bring in another $12 million annually if the plants run more efficiently.

Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

Laptop Computer The three plants -- Hope Creek and Salem I and Salem II -- have been plagued by problems in recent months and have had to shut down on numerous occasions because of equipment failure. Hope Creek has been on an extended outage since October after a rupture in a drain.

Desktop Computer Foes of the plant said a bigger concern remains -- flaws in a pump that helps cool the reactor. State environmental officials have told PSEG Nuclear it should replace the pump before restarting the facility, but the company says it poses no danger to the public.

Notebooks Exelon managers have looked at the pump and agree, Rowe said. "We believe the pump is in proper shape to restart," Rowe said yesterday during a news briefing on the merger in Chicago.

Lenovo Rowe's stance drew criticism from Jeff Tittel, a lobbyist for the Sierra Club of New Jersey. "We're concerned they are more focused on the bottom line than looking at the need to make upgrades," he said.

Hard Drive At a separate news briefing in Philadelphia earlier in the day, E. James Ferland, the president and chief executive of PSEG, said Hope Creek should be ready to be restarted by the end of the year. The company, though, has agreed to wait until after a meeting with the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission before restarting the plant. That meeting has not been scheduled.

Travelstar Ferland said the Exelon acquisition will mean smoother operations at PSEG's plants because Exelon already runs 17 nuclear plants at 10 sites and has a strong standard operating procedure for the plants.

Gateway "It's like a cookbook: This is how we run our plants," Ferland said.

Laptop Parts The proposed merger also is worrisome to union officials.

Software "We're not too happy with it," said Ed Dickert, president of Local 601 of the Utility Workers of America, which represents 1,400 workers at Public Service Electric & Gas, a unit of PSEG and the largest utility in New Jersey. "My biggest concern is I don't want Exelon to come in here and diminish customer services," he said.

Hard Drives Dickert said he does not expect the union to bear any job cuts, with most of the losses occurring among management personnel, at least in the short term.

Electronics Exelon and PSEG said they expected the deal to create immediate cost savings, and provide improved service because of efficiencies with generation, transmission, distribution and marketing.

Canon The merger is expected to close in 12 to 15 months pending review by state and federal regulators.
