MaxDefense Firewall Dramatically Decreases Virus/Worm Threats on WinXP Embedded

Maxspeed Sets New Standard for Thin Client Security on Microsoft Windows XP Embedded

MaxDefense Firewall Dramatically Decreases Virus/Worm Threats

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 18, 2004--Maxspeed Corporation, the technology leader in thin client computing solutions, today announced the release of MaxDefense, a firewall designed to prevent virus/worm attacks for its line of MaxTerm and MaxBook thin client products running Microsoft Windows XP Embedded. MaxDefense will soon be shipping with all MaxTerm and MaxBook thin clients. Customers may also upgrade their older XPE thin clients with this new software.
MaxDefense prevents virus/worm attacks by blocking their transport mechanisms, and prevents the spread of the virus/worm if a thin client becomes physically infected. With MaxDefense, an administrator has complete control over both incoming and outgoing network traffic by port number and protocol type. This feature provides maximum security through Layer 3 packet filtering and gives an administrator the ability to establish filters for specific ports and protocols. MaxDefense can also be configured to allow inbound or outbound communication to and from a specific IP address or a specific subnet, providing greater flexibility. The firewall application has an intuitive and easy-to-use interface, and comes with a variety of pre-built, customizable filters.

MaxDefense gives thin client Windows XP Embedded users a robust and flexible alternative to Microsoft's Internet Connection Firewall, which gives the administrator limited control over blocking incoming ports only.

"Thin client are inherently more secure than PCs to begin with, due to a more controlled set of services provided. We've determined that our thin client users require specialized security technology to combat ever increasing virus and worm attacks," said Wei Ching, President, Maxspeed. "By carefully studying our customers' usage patterns and history of attacks, we were able to bring thin-client security to an even higher level by developing a state-of-the-art firewall, MaxDefense, which delivers unmatched security without degrading performance or usability. This offering is just the latest proof of our ongoing commitment to customer-centric and time-sensitive innovation across all our hardware, software and support lines."

MaxDefense leverages Maxspeed's 16 years of thin client expertise, and was developed through exhaustive study of client usage patterns and security threats. MaxDefense will be completely customizable and will be integrated with Maxspeed's enterprise-class Management Software: MMS 3.0. Using MMS, an administrator will be able to configure the proper security settings remotely and push down these same settings to tens of thousands of devices with a simple mouse click.

Availability

MaxDefense will be available in Q2 2004 at no cost to Maxspeed customers who would like to upgrade, and can be downloaded at ftp.maxspeed.com. At the release date, all future Maxspeed MaxTerm and MaxBook 8000 series thin clients will ship with the firewall.
