PCs left over after an upgrade often do an admirable job as file servers. You just need to know what components are important, what parts you can do without, and how to adjust Windows so other computers on the network can access the file server. The following steps will tell you how to create a file server using an old computer with Windows XP installed, although with a little tweaking most of the following tips apply to a computer using any version of Windows...

System Requirements

When everything is properly configured, any computer on your network should be able to use a shared network printer. You can share a printer wirelessly using a wireless print server, Fi networks. When you connect your printer to a wireless print server, any computer on your network can access the printer directly through the network.

Laptop Computer WINDOWS REQUIREMENTS

  Desktop Computer In addition to the processor required by your OS, this application requires at least a Pentium II 300-MHz processor-based computer or better

• Notebooks Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, or XP for clients

• Lenovo Windows NT 4.0 SP6 or 2000 Server Edition for server installation

• Hard Drive In additional to the minimum RAM required by the operating system you are running, this CD-ROM requires 128 Megs available RAM

• Travelstar 650 MB free hard disk space or network drive space for program and media installation

• Gateway SVGA display, thousands of colors or more (800x600 resolution or higher required)

• Laptop Parts 4X Speed or faster CD-ROM

• Software Sound card

• Hard Drives QuickTime 5 or higher (link provided, internet connection required)

• Electronics Acrobat Reader (link provided, internet connection required)

• Canon Ability to connect to the Internet, any 56Kbps or better modem for installation or update of QuickTime and/or Acrobat Reader

Installing MathPro 4.02

Desktop Computers On the CD you will find a program named setup. Run it to begin the MathPro installation. Alternatively, you can click on the Start Button, and select run. Enter

e:\setup

Think Pad where "e:\" represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM. If it is a different letter, enter that instead.

Repair Follow the instructions provided within the installation program.

Data Recovery To install the latest version of QuickTime an internet connection is needed. To install the latest version of QuickTime:

1. Cisco Open an Internet Connection and launch a browser.

2. Keyboard Type the URL www.apple.com/quicktime/download into the address line of the browser.

3. Monitor Follow the provided instructions to download and install QuickTime.

Desktop Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to read and print the User's Manual. To install the latest version of Acrobat Reader an internet connection is needed. To install the latest version of Acrobat Reader:

1. Infosys Open an Internet Connection and launch a browser.

2. Refurbished Laptops Type the URL www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html into the address line of the browser.

3. Wipro Follow the provided instructions to download and install Acrobat Reader.

Known Issues

Maxtor When viewing QuickTime movies, an error will occur if you do not close the current movie before opening the next one. Always close the movie you are watching before you watch another one. Also, only click once on the "Watch" button, as the same error will occur if you click on "Watch" multiple times. It may take your computer a few moments to open up the movie once you have clicked on "watch".

Data Storage Some sound cards are incompatible with MathPro on Windows NT and Windows 2000. If you receive an error message when trying to play the videos, indicating that there may be problems with your audio, press "continue". If you do not hear any audio, please contact your sound card manufacturer for the latest drivers and support.

1. Rational Re-run the client install for all client workstations.

2. Websphere Open the CONVERT.LOG using Notepad in your install directory for a list of students whose login names changed.

Installing MathPro Explorer 4.02 to Workstations
-----------------------------------------------

It Support The Client Install upgrades MathPro Explorer 3.0 client workstations and gives new client workstations access to MathPro Explorer 4.02 on the network. Specifically, the appropriate file type association is established for MathPro Explorations, and the appropriate Start Menu Program Folder items are created.

Western Digital Follow the instructions below on each workstation:

1. Music Log on to the file server

2. Networks Open Windows Explorer

3. Toner Select the "MathPro Explorer" folder on the file server (in the installed location)

4. Cheap Laptops Open the "Client" folder contained within "MathPro Explorer"

5. Wholesale Click on "SETUP" and follow the instructions in the installer

Accessing MathPro Explorer

Netvista You will have a new folder on your network drive called "MathPro Explorer". Each book installed will be within a "MathPro Explorer" directory. All client workstations must run the Client Install from the network to access MathPro Explorer (see section Additional Window Network Install Information in your manual for more details). Click the Start button and choose Programs to access the Program Folder for the desired book. You may run the MathPro Explorer, the MathPro Help, the Glossary, or the Administrator from this group. Access to the Explorations is available from within MathPro Explorer.
