On The River, A Hot And Dangerous Summer

Laptop Battery Unusually hot weather has drawn more people to the Delaware River this summer and, as a result, water rescuers have found themselves busier than usual. Already this summer, two people have drowned in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area -- compared with none last year -- and at least seven have been rescued.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad In other parts of the river, seven people have died since Memorial Day, including 39-year-old Luis Alberto Vargas of Costa Rica, who drowned last Sunday off Pohatcong in Warren County.

Microsoft The rescue-and-recovery activity is drawing comparisons to the summer of 1999, when the death toll at the Water Gap reached seven, the highest seasonal total since the National Park Service began keeping records in 1971.

Hot becomes dangerous when you begin thinking about the potential of 140 o F. If you were to touch the hottest parts of your laptop, you could potentially obtain serious burns in seconds. In a mere 11 seconds, degree burn if you constantly touched your laptop when it had a temperature of 131 o F. At 140 o F, degree burn in 2 seconds. This is when you need to be concerned that your laptop has become dangerously hot.

Laptop Computers "It's a percentage issue," said Art North, acting chief ranger for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. "The more people that come out, the more people you have putting themselves at risk. And it seems like this year we're having larger crowds, and for a longer period of time, than even in 1999."

Laptop Computer In any year, swimming the Delaware is potentially dangerous, especially for an inexperienced swimmer.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Desktop Computer "There's a lot of sharp drop-offs and currents you can't see, that you're oblivious to," said Kevin Scheirer of East Stroudsbourg, Pa., a canoe-service worker who saved three New Jerseyans from drowning in the river two weeks ago. "When a strong current grabs you, it's very dangerous."

Notebooks The Water Gap attracts more than 5 million visitors a year and includes about 40 miles of riverfront that twists through 70,000 acres of ridges and forests.

Lenovo After the spate of drownings in 1999, the park service added warning signs along shorelines, placed ring buoys in busy areas, increased weekend ranger staffing and opened a beach with lifeguards on the New Jersey shore near Depue Island.

Hard Drive This year's strategy includes adding more warning signs and placing public service announcements about the dangers of river swimming on Spanish-language radio stations.

Travelstar Hispanic residents from urban areas in New Jersey and New York make up a significant percentage of weekend swimmers -- and river fatalities -- officials said. Many don't understand posted English warning signs, said river rangers, noting that some signs are now in Spanish.

Gateway Two of the men Scheirer saved two weeks ago spoke only Spanish, he said.

Laptop Parts "It's rare that fatalities are local people," North said.

Software Many English speakers from urban areas also can misread the water and find themselves in trouble.

Hard Drives "We think a contributing factor is that they don't have the opportunity to be familiar with outdoor environments like people who live in rural areas," North said. "They don't recognize the potential danger. It you look at it (river), it looks fairly placid."

Electronics Despite the park service's efforts, most of the river's shoreline will always be without signs or lifeguards, leaving people to fend for themselves or rely on passersby. But authorities say that people ignore routinely posted rules that they have a lifejacket while on a vessel.

Canon None of the three people who Scheirer saved was wearing a life jacket. And last weekend, North issued citations to people in a boat who were not wearing lifejackets and led them to shore, only to notice later that they had crossed the river after he left, still without life jackets.

Desktop Pc "If I had to emphasize one thing that would help people here, it would be life jackets, life jackets, and life jackets," North said. "People that wear life jackets are probably not going to drown."

Desktop Computers Last week, Asir Daboul of New York drove his family to the river in Hardwick, and swam without a life jacket along with his friend, Kalid Said, who sported a snorkeling mask. The men did not know of drownings at the river.

Think Pad "It's very calm," Daboul said. "It doesn't look like it's dangerous."

Repair "It's no fun swimming with a life jacket on," said John Maxwell of Flemington, a frequent river visitor, as he entered the water off Depue Island. "I know people have drowned in the area, but when you know the river, you can tell when things are getting rough."

Data Recovery Others are less trusting of even docile-looking water.

Cisco "You can't be too careful when it comes to nature," said Winnie Michaluk of Delaware Water Gap, Pa., whose three children wore life jackets while swimming last week. "When it comes to the safety of your kids, I don't think you can be too careful. Even if you go to a swimming pool."
