Fuel-Cell Car A Hit On Tour

Laptop Battery For the first time in the history of the Tour de Sol - the alternative car festival that once showcased such oddities as vehicles with wing-shaped solar panels - a major American carmaker is creating the big buzz.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad General Motors' Hy-wire sedan, with such features as acceleration and braking mechanisms on the steering wheel, front and back doors opening together from the car's midsection and a vast, empty expanse under the sleek glass front, generates all of the energy needed to run the concept car from a hydrogen-powered fuel cell housed in the chassis. Its only tailpipe emission is water.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers Is the maker of the Chevy Chevette poised to take a quantum leap into the future?

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer The answer is yes, company engineers said yesterday at a Tour de Sol stop in Trenton - but not anytime soon. GM has said it will make what it calls a "small fleet" version of the car by 2010 but will not bring the revolutionary new chassis design to the mass market before 2015 at the earliest.

Desktop Computer "They call it a concept vehicle, and that's a good description. It's a dream - a sketch," said Nancy Hazard, director of the Tour de Sol. The big news, she added, is that a major corporation "recognizes the importance of this technology of the future and that they want to play a role."

Notebooks Indeed, General Motors has taken to calling hydrogen-powered cars "the vision of the future."

Lenovo Company officials choose the expression carefully, they say, because significant hurdles remain between the creation of prototypes such as the Hy-wire and their mass production.

Hard Drive Cost is an issue, at least in the short run.

Travelstar "Fuel cells are too expensive by a factor of 10," GM development engineer Jeff Wolak noted candidly yesterday.

Laptop Parts And there are several unanswered questions about fuel cell technology - principal among them is how best to obtain the hydrogen. Taking it from fossil fuels such as natural gas is one possibility, although not one preferred by many on the Tour de Sol, where renewable energy is the name of the game.

Software "That is a very volatile question to say the least . . . and yet to be determined," said Robert Vitale, a research engineer for GM's division of design and technology fusion. "Whoever produces it will want to do it on a profit basis."

Hard Drives "Where they get it from is important," noted Hazard. "If you have a hydrogen vehicle with an environmental advantage, the hydrogen needs to be produced in an environmentally friendly process."

Electronics Hazard said she is encouraged by the near-term progress on the part of the world's big automakers. While the Hy-wire may be more than a decade away, the Big Three automakers are joining their Japanese counterparts in rolling out more energy efficient cars with gas-electric hybrid motors.

Canon Industry watchers note that GM will introduce hybrid versions of its GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado by the end of the year and a hybrid sport utility vehicle - the Saturn Vue - in 2005.

Desktop Pc The Ford Motor Co. is coming out with a hybrid Escape SUV in the next several months, which it says will be available to the general public by late next summer. DaimlerChrysler has said it will introduce a hybrid version of its Dodge Ram pickup in 2005.

Desktop Computers Toyota is making substantial improvements to the Prius, the first hybrid sold commercially in the late 1990s.

Think Pad "We can save a lot of gas and air pollution by doing the doable with hybrid technology that is here now," said Dena Mottola, executive director of the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group.

Data Recovery Environmental advocates such as Mottola note with some irony that General Motors is lobbying against a bill in the New Jersey legislature that would require the carmaker to lower the emissions of cars sold here while it is showcasing the sort of technology that would allow the company to do just that.

Cisco "What that car demonstrates is that they will, in fact, be able to meet the program's requirements," Mottola said, adding, "We can't get these cars soon enough in New Jersey, where car emissions are creating a public health crisis. We have the highest density of cars per square mile, and 10 percent of the population lives with some form of respiratory illness."

Keyboard GM spokeswoman Joanne Krell responded that while the carmaker "shares the same goal of getting to zero emissions," officials do not feel regulations are necessary.

Monitor "What we don't believe is mandating a car that a customer must buy," she said.

Desktop While the big automakers may be making news at the annual Tour de Sol, ambitious high school teams continue to be its most enthusiastic participants. A group from Trenton Central High School, calling itself the Tornado Fuelmasters, created the "Vegginator," which runs on used cooking oil from the school cafeteria collected over a five-month period.

Infosys "We filter it to get out the food particles and separate the fat particles, and we're left with bio-diesel. It gets 35 to 40 miles per gallon," said Evelyn DeLeon, a junior who hopes to be an electrical engineer some day.

Refurbished Laptops Not to mention the reduction in tailpipe emissions of up to 90 percent, noted the group's director, David Cipolloni, and the savings in disposal costs of up to $1 per gallon.

Wipro The tour is in Philadelphia today and moves on to Washington, D.C., tomorrow.
