Laptop Computer Aug 13, 2004 (AXcess News/SourcePress) Philadelphia - The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index hit a 52-week low Wednesday with semiconductor stocks continuing their fall Thursday after analysts showed concern over that sector's earnings outlook. But loss for some means opportunity for others as bargain hunters begin to watch those stocks.

Desktop Computer National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) led the sell-off, dropping 15.4% Wednesday to close at $13.28, though managing to recover half the loss to close Thursday at $13.50.
Notebooks The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbled 24.29 points or 6.2% to 368.67 Wednesday and continued its slide through Thursday's session to close at 365.27, down another 7.4%. Earlier in the session it dipped as low as 366.77. The SOXX was down 30.1% year-to-date by Thursday, hitting a new 52-week low for a second consecutive day.
Lenovo On Tuesday, Lehman Brothers downgraded the semiconductor sector to "neutral" from "positive," saying that it appears the "current expansion may now be peaking."
Hard Drive In a research note published Thursday, Deutche Bank analyst, Nicolas Gaudois, said "global semiconductor stocks have been pressurized by sector specific and under pressure for months. The second quarter results of various semiconductor companies and their reduced earnings guidance has aggravated these concerns."

Gateway high inventory levels in the semiconductor industry indicate that utilization levels have peaked, Deutche Bank says.
Laptop Parts With period results due out on many of the semiconductor stocks, Gaudois' comments on companies in that sector appeared to be more of a safe harbor approach, overlooking the improved values brought about by lower share prices for many of these companies. Though finding the bargains isn't easy.
Software Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) has seen its shares slide 20% in two months. Last week Intel and IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) announced its next-generation xServer technology using Intel's new x86 processor. (See, "Intel May Have Competition in Supporting Faster Server Technology") Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) has dropped 30% since July. AMD has openly said they were planning on going after a larger share of the x86 market. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) fell 22% in the same period, with most of that loss happening earlier this week, after releasing lower guidance for the quarter.
Hard Drives Earlier this year semiconductor component manufacturers were admitting to performance problems with components due to heat damage. Intel recalled chips in May and close partner, IBM, voiced its commitment to furthering nanotechnology developments that could help manufacturers beat the "heat barrier" in miniaturizing components. (See, "Intel's Chip Setback Heats Up Market")In the small cap semiconductor sector, Isonics (NASDAQ: ISON) shares have fallen over 40% since July. The Colorado-based company recently completed the acquisition of a EnCompass Materials Group, LTD (EMG), a wafer manufacturer. The next quarterly report will reflect those assets and combined revenue. At the time, Isonics estimated that the acquisition of EMG would substantially reduce costs, though no figures were released. In an interview Isonics President, Jim Alexander, said "that investors would not see any material improvement so soon after EMG's asset purchase."Alexander's company announced Wednesday that it received ISO9002 certification for Silicon Test Wafer manufacturing through its EMG subsidiary. "We believe that our facility is an excellent platform for launching the next production phase of our SOI wafer business, and with our plan to combine our SOI operations with the test-wafer business that we have acquired, we are focusing on growing revenue in this market segment, said Alexander."
Electronics While Alexander was quick to shun the current period's results, the company's posture amongst bargain hunters may be higher than its "big chip" cousins, Intel, AMD and CSCO, whose corrections ranged from 20 to 30%, verses Isonics 40%. The combined operations and Isonics' heat reduction capabilities of its component manufacturing could put Isonics on a growth spurt in the second half of its operating year and show a significant price recover in its shares.
Canon Amongst the micro cap semiconductor stocks, Perfisans Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB: PFNH) sharply corrected, falling over 50% to hit a low of $0.96 Aug 5, 2004. Perfisans shares have also been getting picked up by bargain hunters after closing up Thursday at $1.06.Source: SourcePress
