HP Reports Solid Fourth Quarter, Beats Expectations

Thinkpad (AXcess News) Palo Alto, CA - Thursday after the market's close, Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) reported its fourth quarter results, beating the street's expections which pushed HP's shares up $1.67 to $30.67 in after-market trading.

ScanSoft reported fourth quarter 2001 revenues of $18.9 million, a 35 percent increase over fourth quarter 2000 revenues of $14.0 million. Income from operations for the fourth quarter of 2001 was $4.6 million, fold increase over operating income of $0.6 million reported during the same period a year ago. Net income before intangibles was $4.7 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, compared with net income before intangibles of $0.4 million, or $0.01 per share, for the fourth quarter of 2000. related intangibles. After including this item, ScanSoft reported a net loss of $2.4 million, or $0.04 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2001 compared with a net loss of $6.2 million, or $0.13 per share, for the fourth quarter of 2000. ScanSoft's operational cash flows for the fourth quarter were $4.4 million.

Laptop Computers Investors were delighted with the news having been concerned since the exit of ex-CEO Carly Fiorina when Mark Hurd picked up the reins in her stead. Hurd's restructering appears to be paying off as evidenced by HP earnings results.

Desktop Computer Hurd took over as CEO on April 1 and had to deal with cleaning up the merger of Compac Computer Company with Hewlett-Packard. By July, Hurd said that HP would be cutting 14,500 jobs in effort to reorganize the company.

Notebooks Yesterday, HP said it would be cutting 800 jobs more than Hurd had indicated in July, bringing the total to 15,300 workers.

Lenovo HP took $1.1 billion in charges in the quarter for its restructuring, or 37 cents per share. That put actual earnings after taxes at $416 million or 14 cents per share.

Hard Drive Excluding all its charges, HP reported $1.5 billion in operating profit, or 51 cents a share, vs. $1.2 billion, or 41 cents a share, a year ago.

Travelstar HP reported an increase in revenue of 7 percent for the year of $22.9 billion, compared to $21.4 billion last year. Hurd said that operating profit was up across all business units. Which was good news considering Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL) stating that it was expecting results to slow and that sales in the U.S. and UK were disappointing.

Gateway During the quarter, on a year-over-year basis, HP's revenue in the Americas grew 5% to $10.0 billion, Europe, the Middle East and Africa grew 8% to $9.1 billion, and Asia Pacific grew 12% to $3.8 billion. On a consolidated basis, when adjusted for the effects of currency, fourth quarter revenue grew 6% year-over-year.

Laptop Parts HP estimates its first quarter earnings in 2006 to be in the range of $0.46 to $0.48, excluding $0.03 to $0.04 of stock-based compensation expense. Earnings estimates for the year is expected to be in the range of $1.88 to $1.95, excluding approximately $0.13 of stock-based compensation expense, Hurd said.

Software Shares of HP were at $29.16, up 16 cents, or 0.5%, at 12:48pm EST Friday after profiting taking from HP opening price of $30.11.
