Technical Computing Market Showing Solid Growth, According to IDC
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., July 28, 2004 Following two years of weak market conditions, the technical computing market enjoyed a strong recovery in 2003 with overall growth in sales revenues of 14%. According to new research from IDC, this double-digit growth was driven by pent-up demand in combination with the improved overall economy. IDC expects the market to grow to $7.6 billion in revenue by 2008.
"We believe this upturn represents a return to long-term growth for technical computing sales," said Christopher Willard, vice president of IDC's Workstations and High-Performance Systems program. "After the previous few years of market slowdown, the market is showing signs of strong growth and buyers are in a position to take advantage of significant improvements in price/performance points."
In terms of shipments, IDC expects that the departmental segment (throughput-oriented servers priced under $250,000) will have the largest growth over the forecast period with a 14.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), followed by the divisional segment (throughput servers priced between $250,000 and $1M). The departmental segment was also the highest volume segment in terms of shipments.
The Worldwide High-Performance Technical Computer Systems 2004-2008 Forecast (IDC #31317) presents the forecast for the technical server market for the 2004-2008 period. It includes the following segments: technical capability, technical enterprise, technical divisional, and technical departmental.
