Norse volleyball captures the title at home tournament
Date 10/5/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsAfter defeating conference competitors Dubuque, 3-1, women's volleyball captured first place at the Luther College Norse Invitational Tournament on Sept. 29-30. The Norse won every match, beginning with Viterbo on Friday, 3-0 (15-4, 15-12, 15-12).
Later Friday evening, the women met Northwestern and defeated them in three out of four close games (15-12, 15-17, 15-4, 15-11) to win the match. Sarah Martin ('01) led the Norse to victory in this match with 24 kills, and Katie Kuhlman ('04) had 58 assists.
On Saturday, Luther faced Mt. Senario and won again in three games (15-3, 15-6, 15-5) with Courtney Kuehl ('03) slamming 14 kills. Lisa Dybvik ('02) added 31 assists to help carry the Norse to the championship game.
The women faced Grand View College for the championship and came up victorious, 3-1 (13-15, 15-7, 15-11, 15-8). In this match, Martin contributed 19 kills and 6 digs while Kuhlman added 50 assists, leaving the Norse undefeated on their home court.
Following their team's success, both Martin and Branstand earned All-Tournament honors.
Junior Amber Fahning commented on this weekend's play stating, "We finally got things to click, and it will help us to build our confidence for our next games." The Norse face Central and Wartburg next week in conference play.
Fahning concluded, "Things are going really well now. Hopefully we'll be able to keep our excitement level up."
