Backstreet Boys hip-hop their way to Dorian Festival
Date 4/15/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: Other Young super-group Backstreet Boys will be guest clinicians and performers at the Dorian Choral Festival in January 2000, announced Tim Peter, professor of music, at the Concert Band concert Tuesday, April 13.
"We are excited to bring new ideas and variety to Luther and the Dorian Festival," Peter said.
The Backstreet Boys have a special connection at Luther: Weston Noble, professor of music. Noble served as a guest conductor at a music workshop at the Boys' high school in 1994. Since then, Noble has kept in contact with the group during their skyrocket to stardom.
"I knew those five boys would go places when I worked with them. I'm glad they are finally able to come to Luther and shake things up around here," said Noble.
Backstreet Boy Nick Carter said he is excited about coming to Luther and teaching the Dorians how to loosen up.
"Music is so stuffy at Luther. I know Dorian is a huge recruitment tool for the college. Hopefully we can get the Dorians to bring excitement and vitality to the program when they enroll as students," he said.
Backstreet Boys will host workshops entitled "Making Religious Music Rock" and "Dress the Part: Robes Schmobes." Enrollment is restricted to Dorian Festival participants, music faculty and choir members.
The Backstreet Boys will perform at the Dorian Festival Grand Concert, which is free and open to the public.
