Garmin GPSMAP and GPSMAP Sounder

Staff If you don't want to go the PC route and aren't tied to any other electronic map format, take a look at Garmin's 192C and 198C sounder . Built on Garmin's popular 182 series units, both models offer a brighter display with a 16-color, 5-inch-diagonal backlit TFT (thin film transistor; each pixel has its own transistor) LCD screen. Both units store 3,000 waypoints and 50 reversible routes with up to 254 points each on Garmin's built-in BlueChart cartography (coastal United States). Both also have a 2,500-point automatic track log that saves up to 15 retraceable tracks. They also include alarms for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, proximity waypoint, clock and low battery. You can display positioning when connected to your DSC-equipped VHF, and both contain built-in tide tables. Bracket or flush-mount these units, which are submersible to IP-X7 standards. The 198C Sounder boasts a dual-frequency (50/200-kHz) sonar transducer with a 500-Watt (RMS) output. MSRP runs $943 to $1,179, depending on configuration.
