Number Of Birds Killed By West Nile Soars Above Reports

Laptop Battery The bodies of thousands of birds killed by the West Nile virus littered backyards, ranches, nature preserves - even the White House - this year. Songbirds were silenced. Majestic raptors were felled, as were exotic zoo birds.

Brault said this makes it easier for the West Nile virus to adapt to rapidly changing environments. The study found that the death rate among crows exposed to the more virulent strain of the virus was 94 percent, compared to 31 percent among crows exposed to a less virulent version, AFP reported. In 2006, 4, 200 people in the United States were infected with the West Nile virus and 177 died. So far this year, only about a dozen deaths have been reported, but the number of infections has increased fourfold compared to the same time last year.

Thinkpad In the three years that West Nile has picked up steam, infecting thousands of humans as it zigzagged across the nation, public-health labs confirmed the virus killed more than 25,000 wild birds.

Mosquitoes are irritating to you and your dog as well, no one likes getting a mosquito bite. Mosquitoes were never thought to be a major threat to dogs and humans. Yet with the recent cases of West Nile Virus, there is a concern. West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes. Dog K9 Advantix not only repels mosquitoes but kills them as well. .

Microsoft But a leading expert says they are a fraction of the total picture.

Laptop Computers "The proportion of dead birds that get tested by public-health labs is minuscule," said Nicholas Komar, a microbiologist in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's lab in Fort Collins, which leads the nation's West Nile research. "The true number of birds that has died is a very large number," he said, adding that it probably exceeds 1 million.

In New Jersey, officials have reported a lone bird testing positive for West Nile so far this spring. No human cases have been reported in the United States this year. Stephen Ostroff, deputy director of the CDC's national center for infectious diseases, said it was unclear whether the mosquitoes responsible for spreading the virus would pose as much of a health risk to the public as they did in 2002.

Laptop Computer No one really knows for sure. Komar and other researchers say they'd like such a fundamental question and others answered in future research to shed more light on birds' role in spreading West Nile.

Desktop Computer Komar, a lifelong bird-watcher, has seen West Nile's impact through his birding binoculars and, in the lab, through a magnifying microscope. He'll share his notes with other birding hobbyists during a free public lecture tonight.

Notebooks In Colorado, 131 birds, 378 horses and 12 humans were confirmed infected this year.

Lenovo Feathered fowl build up high doses of West Nile and infect mosquitoes that feed on them.

Hard Drive Birds are so crucial to West Nile's proliferation in North America that some researchers say the virus is flying across the nation on the wings of migrating birds.

Travelstar Stephen Guptill, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist working on a project that tests live birds along major migratory routes, has a "totally unscientific bet" that Northern cardinals may be leading culprits. Maps of West Nile's march across America match the scarlet birds' wide-ranging migration.

Gateway Komar is not convinced that migratory birds are the sole suspects. Planes, boats and trucks, for instance, let tainted mosquitoes hitch a ride across the country.

Laptop Parts But of the 26 species of birds that Komar infected with West Nile in the lab, songbirds, sandpipers and gulls maintained high virus loads the longest without dying. In addition, those birds are marathon migrators.

Software The true answer is unknown because few research projects test live birds in the wild to find out how much West Nile they carry and how many are infected.

Hard Drives Public health departments see a link between the number of dead crows per square mile and a higher risk of West Nile leaping to humans. Their labs solely test crows and their relatives for West Nile.

Electronics And public health labs only test dead birds.

Canon Komar has seen in Colorado plenty of live birds in the corvid or crow-related family.

Desktop Pc "The one thing I've noticed that really stands out for me this year is the crow population and magpies and the blue jay population seems to be healthy ... and ravens, too," he said.

Desktop Computers If those birds survived a brush with West Nile that normally kills up to 100 percent of their corvid cousins, they could have a genetic advantage to pass to heirs.

Think Pad The Smithsonian Institution is gathering researchers in the coming months to create a think tank that would prioritize research to gauge West Nile's true impact among wildlife, with hopes of finding wildlife lovers with deep pockets to bankroll the projects.
