Do's & Don'ts Of Recycling

In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers One of the worst offenders: plastic grocery bags.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer "We have a problem with that," Lewis said. She said people often place their recyclables in the bags before putting them into the blue recycling bucket. But those bags are just ending up in the landfill.

And then, of course, we have the Standalone Server product, which is called Acronis True Image Server for Windows or Linux and that will manage a single standalone server. What type of computers can we back up, because in a medium to a large sized, even some small sized businesses, who knows what kind of computers they have They may have laptops, they may have desktops, they may just have anything and everything

Desktop Computer Another problem is the many items people will believe are recyclable but are not accepted at the center in Bridgewater.

Notebooks While corrugated cardboard is accepted, Lewis said paperboard -- such as that used in cereal boxes -- is not. If it is mixed in with the recycling, it gets thrown out.

Lenovo Plastic bottles and containers make up the largest amount of items thrown away. The center only accepts resin types 1 and 2 plastics -- such as soft drink bottles, detergent bottles and milk bottles. Resin types 3 through 7 are not accepted and include certain shampoo bottles, yogurt containers, buckets, egg trays, cups, and certain condiment bottles among others. Lewis said recyclers should check the plastic for the triangular recycle symbol with a number in it before recycling.

Hard Drive "People should really look before they buy," she said. "There's a lot of plastics now that can't be recycled. It's very complex. Once I got involved, I couldn't believe there's over 400 resins of plastics."

Travelstar Toys are also unacceptable. "We don't recycle toys and I don't know any county in New Jersey that recycles toys because they are made with different plastics," Lewis said.

Gateway Bill Saller, superintendent of the Recycling Center, said the center does not have the capacity to accept all plastic types and the two that are accepted were chosen for their resale value.

Laptop Parts "You can't take everything," he said. "There's no market for it is what it boils down to."

Software Lewis suggested recyclers check for nearby facilities that may accept the items the Recycling Center won't take. She also said consumers should call companies selling plastic containers that are non-recyclable and complain.

Hard Drives Saller said despite the level of garbage being shipped out from the center, Somerset County residents are among "best recyclers in the country."

Electronics "A great majority of them follow the rules," he said.

Canon Reusing toys and other items instead of throwing them out can is an alternative to recycling, and avoiding over-packaged items such as sip drinks and individually packaged snacks can help as well, Lewis noted.

Desktop Pc "There's more than just recycling; there's reducing and reusing," she said. "Just recycling is not enough."

Desktop Computers A final tip offered is to thoroughly rinse the items to be recycled. That will reduce the smell and health risk for workers at the center.
