Notebooks When it comes to new ways to run cars, hope springs eternal, but the dreamers keep switching gears. Ten years ago, President Bill Clinton launched a federal research effort into hybrids, cars with both internal combustion engines and electric motors. They were supposed to share the work, each doing the part to which it is best suited. The electric motor does not consume fuel when the car is idle, and has high torque at low speeds, so it would do well in slow-moving city traffic; the internal combustion engine runs efficiently and cleanly at high speed, and uses gasoline, a substance that is easy to put on board and carries a lot of energy in a small volume.

Hard Drive But when the Bush administration took office, that became old thinking. Triple wasnt enough; what was needed was to leapfrog to a new technology. In his State of the Union address, the president said that fuel cells would be the new focus.

Gateway Using hydrogen in a fuel cell may be pollution-free, but making hydrogen isnt. Nor is compressing it for storage on a vehicle. Toyotas prototype uses four tanks, each the size of a jumbo thermos, pumped up to 5,000 pounds per square inch, a job that consumes far more electricity than, say, pumping the energy equivalent in gasoline from an underground tank through a filling station pump and into a car. And pollution is usually generated in separating the hydrogen from whatever it was chemically bound to often water so that it is pure, and free to be combined with oxygen in the fuel cell.
Laptop Parts Who would produce, store and ship the hydrogen is not clear, but it could be a new song sung by an old cast. Two oil companies, Shell and Chevron-Texaco, are prominent.
Software Toyota and Honda, never part of the governments research effort on hybrids, have pioneered the move to new powertrains by selling tens of thousands of hybrids, and are gearing up to sell many more. Ford is planning hybrid versions of some vehicles, although General Motors has recently postponed production of some hybrid vehicles it had planned.
Hard Drives Meanwhile, the internal combustion engine, which environmentalists had left for dead, is emerging as a dangerous competitor for new technologies. The Prius engine is programmed to run in its sweet spot to minimize emissions. Toyota and other companies are finding that in plain old gasoline-only cars, re-engineering can drastically cut emissions. Sometimes the changes are as small as moving the catalytic converter closer to the exhaust manifold, so that it heats up faster and starts working sooner, as in the version of the Ford Focus built for California and other states with high levels of smog. All it took was a decade of threatening the automakers with a requirement for zero-emission cars, which presumably would have been battery-powered, and they created near-zero emissions from gasoline.
