Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, Barbados

Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, Barbados

The best resorts on Barbados are well supplied with the island's famed resources: gentle sands, inviting waters and Bajan courtesy.

Accra Beach Hotel & Resort boasts a handsome stock of all of the above on Accra Beach, the prettiest beach on south coast. You'll receive your first helping of hospitality at the registration desk, where staff attitudes are as sunny and welcoming as the broad-arched view of the Caribbean's endless blue waters, which are visible from the lobby.

Totally rebuilt in 1996, the hotel's architecture offers laid-back comfort with Spanish style. Stucco walls, shuttered windows and doors, broad tiled walkways and polished wood furniture lead guests and cool breezes throughout the hotel. Rooms are big and bigger (there are two-story penthouse suites with skylit whirlpool tubs), all of which reflect the creams, blues and greens of the beachfront setting.

Amidst the manicured grounds, you can lap in the pool, which rambles through a cave, under falls, beside a sunning amphitheater and up to underwater bar stools tended by masters of Barbadian rum punch. Or walk a few steps farther to the sand to dip into the real thing -- the lolling waves of the Caribbean.

Accra Beach is especially well-situated, set in the center of the south coast, but just 10 minutes away from Grantley Adams International Airport. Two miles to the west is the historic heart of Bridgetown, and to the east is the fast-paced nightlife of St. Lawrence Gap -- the southeast coast revered by surfers and Oistins fish market, where flying-fish is in the fryer and fish steaks are on the grill.

The hotel also offers conference rooms, computer data ports, squash courts, shops, boogie boards and day trips. Dining options include Sand Bar Lounge, Wytukai (with Polynesian flair), and the open-air Coco Patch, where the day starts with a tropical breakfast and ends with creative dinners that blend Caribbean and contemporary cooking.

Accra Beach's 128 rooms, including six that are specially designed for physically disabled guests, range from US$155 to US$365 per night, depending on season and room; meal plans are available. For more information, call 246-435-8920 or visit www.funbarbados.com .
