(NYSE: TOT; Paris: TOTF), the French oil company, earnings report is due this week and investors as well as analysts are waiting to see how the company faired.ChevronTexaco (NYSE: CVX) just released record results for the first quarter, surprising many Wall Street pundits and now, speculation leans towards Total S.A. to follow in CVX's footsteps, beating analysts average estimates of $2.05.

Laptop Computer Goldman Sachs raised Total S.A. rating to "Outperform" from "Inline" February 9th after downgrading the oil stock to "Inline" from "Outperform" January 6, 2004. Lehman Brothers also rates TOT an "Equal-weight" from "Overweight".

Lenovo Fueling investors speculation was the rumor that Total S.A. might buy into Russian oil company, Sibneft (RSE: SIBN). So strong were investors' sentiments that the company released an announcement April 29, 2004 denying that it was in talks with Sibneft.
Hard Drive "We are not having special talks with Sibneft," Christophe de Margerie, head of exploration for the French oil company, told reporters at an international oil conference in Paris.
Travelstar Pressed on whether Total was planning to take a 25 percent stake in Sibneft's capital, de Margerie said, "There is no really deep discussion going on. In any case we are not close to anything at this point. I talk with everybody."
