EDS, IBM and Raytheon JPS Communications Showcase Wireless Data Solutions in Nextel's Las Vegas Monorail Convention Center Station

Station Stop Offers One-of-a-Kind Branding Opportunity and Unique Environment for Customer Digital Wireless Experience

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 2005--Nextel Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL) and Alliance Partner Sponsors - EDS, IBM and Raytheon JPS Communications - have teamed up to offer customers, visitors and business professionals an opportunity to experience wireless data solutions in a unique environment that fosters a hands-on, digital wireless interactive experience. Housed in the largest station on the Monorail system, Nextel Central - which celebrated its opening last weekend - encompasses an all-in-one transit station, product showroom, flagship Nextel Retail Store and a dedicated showcase area featuring solutions from EDS, IBM and Raytheon JPS Communications.
This 15,000-square-foot facility is a wireless industry first where a monorail station stop is branded as a sales and marketing venue, taking advantage of the more than 5 million conventioneers that visit the Las Vegas Convention Center. Such shows as the Consumer Electronics Show, World of Concrete and ConExpo have enabled more than 120,000 people to visit Nextel Central so far this year.

The newest feature of this facility highlights the alliance partner solution showcase area that is accessible by the general public. Each alliance partner house kiosks in Nextel Central highlighting solutions that help customers improve business performance with end-to-end wireless data solutions and information about their Nextel alliance relationship. Video presentations show visitors and customers the benefits Nextel and its partners jointly deliver.

The EDS kiosk highlights the company's strength in developing and integrating technology-based solutions with Nextel technology. Showcased solutions include mobile trouble ticketing and mobile communications for public safety, providing users with anywhere, anytime desktop access to information. IBM demonstrates its expertise in wireless applications and implementation services for both government and enterprise clients with Nextel technology, highlighting solutions such as remote asset monitoring and citywide networks. Customers benefit from joint solutions that have been pre-integrated, pre-tested and can be rapidly deployed. Raytheon JPS Communications showcases its ACU technology, which offers public safety agencies the ability to effectively communicate with each other during joint emergency response situations with a robust and proven interoperability solution.

"The completion of this project and the opening of Nextel Central is the culmination of our collective vision to seek out a premier branding opportunity that focused on helping our customers experience the benefits of wireless communications in a hands-on environment," said Mark Schweitzer, senior vice president of marketing at Nextel. "Now, our key corporate and vertical industry customers who frequent Las Vegas on business travel have a venue to work remotely and learn about the latest innovations in wireless technology. It also affords Nextel the opportunity to reach leisure travelers and business prospects visiting the Convention Center with groundbreaking technology."

Nextel Central Monorail Station Stop - Award Winning Design and Successful Marketing Venue

This technologically advanced station recently received the 1st place award in the 2004 International Store Interior Design Competition, sponsored by VM+SD magazine and the Institute of Store Planners. Designed to become a destination in-and-of itself, Nextel looked to Gensler...Architecture, Design & Planning Worldwide for its architecture, interior design, graphics and branding services. Gensler evaluated the needs of three distinct visitor groups - the Monorail user, new Nextel users and existing customers - and created an interior design concept that focuses on addressing daily transit circulation, while providing a stimulating visitor experience.

Located directly across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center, host to the largest percentage of Tradeshow Week's top 200 conventions, Nextel has positioned itself in a highly visible location to meet the demands of the 37 million people who visit Las Vegas each year. By investing in a major brand building and business development venture, Nextel has achieved an industry first in the telecommunications sector.
